  • Jordans Cross a Horse In Focus for a Hot Trainer

  • Beauport has a good record first time out

  • 2023 winner Iberico Lord weighted to win Greatwood again

13:45, Cheltenham - Jordans Cross won well on chase debut at Aintree

Anthony Honeyball has the 'Hot Trainer' flag with his string in good form and has two runners in the novices' handicap chase at Cheltenham, with preference for Ben Godfrey's mount Jordans Cross.

The five-year-old has only had four starts all told and showed a good attitude when getting off the mark on his debut over hurdles at Southwell last season. After only one more run over hurdles, Jordans Cross looked one to follow when returning from ten months off to make a successful debut over fences in a novices' handicap at Aintree three weeks ago.

After briefly getting outpaced, Jordans Cross picked up really well from a fairly unpromising position to lead at the last before pulling two and a half lengths clear of Spadestep, earning the 'Horses In Focus' flag. He heads the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings here with the 'p' symbol denoting further improvement to come. The step up in trip is likely to suit and his Southwell win last year shows he handles soft ground.

14:55, Cheltenham - Beauport returns for in-form yard

Another yard with the 'Hot Trainer' flag is that of Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies who have an interesting runner in Beauport who has his first run since contesting the Grand National in Cheltenham's handicap chase over nearly three and a half miles.

Beauport has a good record fresh and for the second time in his career was successful on his seasonal reappearance around this time last year in the Berkshire National at Ascot. He hasn't always been the best of jumpers, but was much improved in that department last season. After a couple of runs over hurdles to protect his handicap mark following that win by more than thirty lengths at Ascot, Beauport ran well for a long way in the Grand National but ended up doing too much too soon before weakening to finish twelfth.

As well as his stable's good form and his good record fresh, Beauport returns on a handy-looking mark, heading the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings, and with underfoot conditions to suit, he should again prove hard to beat first time out.

15:30, Cheltenham - Iberico Lord's stable beginning to hit top form

The Greatwood Hurdle looks an ultra-competitive handicap but the 2023 winner Iberico Lord looks well enough weighted to have a good chance of becoming the first horse to win the race twice. The Greatwood wasn't his only big handicap success in the 2023/24 season, as he went on to win the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury as well before contesting the Champion Hurdle which was a much stiffer task, especially with Nicky Henderson's stable out of form at the time.

Last season, Iberico Lord proved disappointing back over hurdles after a successful debut over fences, and he therefore needs to bounce back from trailing home at the Punchestown Festival when last seen.

But Iberico Lord has now slipped back to an appealing mark, meaning he heads the Timeform weight-adjusted ratings here. With his yard also beginning to hit top form of late, he therefore makes plenty of appeal and all the rain that has fallen at Cheltenham won't harm his chances either given that the going was heavy when he won the Greatwood two years ago.
