16:45, Newbury - Accademia one to keep on side

Accademia showed glimmers of promise in her three qualifying runs towards the end of last year, but she was easy to back on her return and handicap debut at Lingfield in May.

She shaped as though she was in need of the run that day and, shorter in the market at Doncaster last time, she duly showed improved form to open her account a fortnight ago.

That was a tactical race, and Accademia did well to reel in a couple who had seemingly got first run, still looking a little rough around the edges but readily on top at the line. She was given the Horse In Focus Flag and there's surely more to come from her, so she's one to remain positive about.

19:42, Pontefract - Best Rate a ratings choice

Best Rate had been knocking on the door this season and, well supported at Ascot last week, he arguably proved better than ever to resume winning ways.

That was his first success in a handicap, well suited by the return to a mile, and putting the race to bed nicely when asked.

The conditions of that race mean he's able to race without a penalty, so connections have wisely turned him out quickly - he's due to be 7lb higher in the future - and his jockey is able to claim his 5lb allowance this time, so he makes plenty of appeal as clear top rated on Timeform weight-adjusted ratings.

19:50, Hamilton - Superior Choice the one to beat

Superior Choice is bred in the purple with a 1,100,000 guineas price tag to go with it and he's made good progress this season having shown ability on his sole start last year.

That came over a mile, but he's appreciated the step up in trip this season, opening his account with much more in hand than the bare margin suggested at Leicester in April, well on top at the finish and putting a useful rival - who has won since - to bed comfortably.

He made the most of a good opportunity when following up at Newmarket last time, not having to improve much but still cosily on top at the line, and he looks ready for this step up into listed company now. This even longer trip is entitled to bring about further improvement and he's a rare runner for a yard that has a 50% strike rate at this track.
