Timeform Notebook: A bit of Magic's a Given

Timeform have identified a two-year-old that shaped extremely well at Doncaster on Saturday and should be winning before too long...

The Brocklesby Stakes kicked off the 2014 British Flat Turf season and it produced a potentially-smart winner in the shape of Cock of The North who stormed clear to register a decisive success, looking just about as impressive a winner of the race as there has been in recent years. He is clearly the standard-bearer among the juvenile division at this very early stage of the season, but, in the short-term, it could also be worth paying close attention to the progress of the fourth-placed horse, Magic Florence.

The James Given-trained Magic Florence boasts a good sprinting pedigree - she's a half-sister to the smart sprinter Hamza, while her sire, Zebedee, was a six-time juvenile winner - and she certainly showed plenty of pace on her debut, travelling strongly, looking a real danger a furlong from home, but faltering in the closing stages under considerate handling. Magic Florence was possibly just lacking for a bit of fitness on her racecourse bow, but, given the early speed she showed, it will take a good one to beat her in the coming weeks and she is definitely one to look out for.

Magic Florence - Showed plenty of early speed and looks a banker for an early maiden at least.
