Today's Racing Tips: Ali can deliver another knockout blow at Southwell

Southwell, 12.30 - Back Ali Star Bert @ 7/42.75

The handicap chase won by Ali Star Bert a month ago at today's venue didn't necessarily look like a race which was going to throw up a number of future winners, but that theory has been handsomely disproved since.

Both runner-up Golan Loop and Paper Mill in third have gone on to score since to endorse the form of the selection who was winning for the fourth time on his 14th start at today's venue.

He certainly relished the ease in the ground that day as well as the smaller field as he powered clear of well-backed subsequent Hereford scorer Golan Loop to score readily and, although the handicapper has addressed the balance by raising him 5lb, he tackles a similar level of rival here and should again be very competitive at his favourite track.

Carlisle, 13.40 - Back Nab Wood @ 5/16.00

The presence of Irish raider Letos casts a shadow over this Pertemps Qualifier given the manner of his Naas success last time.

However, Nab Wood should relish these calmer waters and could bounce back to form following a run in a highly competitive Haydock handicap last time.

The selection's finishing position didn't really do him justice last time as he was in the teeth of battle for much of the straight until a sluggish leap at the second last hurdle set him on the back foot as the pace was quickening.

This event seems a more appropriate target for Nicky Richards' gelding who could appreciate returning to a smaller field with the accent more on stamina.
