It almost goes without saying that modest jump horses on deep ground are not prime wagering vehicles so stakes are best kept to a modest level when tackling a race like this novices' handicap hurdle.
It will be interesting to see how the likes of Broomfield Gale and Stage Show acquit themselves on heavy ground, albeit Taunton heavy wouldn't be in the same league as its Ffos Las equivalent.
Connections of the former stated their mare bounced back to form here last month thanks to a return to race on better ground, while Stage Show was last seen winning on fast ground at Exeter last October so their ability to operate under today's conditions must surely be under question.
One horse which shouldn't mind Taunton's terrain is Ask Peter who tackles today's course and distance just nine days after posting one of her best efforts over hurdles behind Our Dylan earlier this month.
She led a competitive field (for the grade) into the straight that day following a fairly aggressive ride and only gave way at the final flight which was commendable considering it was just her second start in handicaps.
Admittedly, the selection is yet to win in seven starts over hurdles but she will arguably never have a better chance and a repeat of last week's performance should see her go close again.

Stamina Chope makes her third appearance in a fortnight in this mares' handicap chase, but the 10-year-old still makes plenty of appeal with her ability to take a swift return to the track assured.
The selection comfortably won a handicap hurdle at the Midlands venue last November just 24 hours after running creditably at Bangor and this test should be ideal for a mare who loves deep ground and a test at today's trip.
She enjoyed those conditions at Ffos Las late last month when comfortably sweeping aside Benignitas courtesy of a patience Lee Edwards ride and I would imagine connections won't deviate too far from a similar gameplan in this handicap.
