Trade to a profit without backing a winner
Trading on Betfair provides the opportunity to profit from any horse race, regardless of the eventual winner. The best part? You don't have to get entangled in the complexities of form analysis either.
Some trades are surprisingly straightforward, so let me take you through an extraordinary trade I executed that made me over £600 in a single race at Royal Ascot.
The first thing to note is that I love large race meetings! The profile of these meetings, along with all the pageantry, coupled with an electric atmosphere, often produce massive betting markets, creating an ideal environment for Betfair trading.
Of course, mentioning Ascot stirs memories of the iconic "Magnificent Seven."
It was 1996 when legendary jockey Frankie Dettori rode all seven winners on a single day at Ascot, a feat so unlikely that it defied incredible odds.
This feat, however, was not at the Royal Ascot. But with the spotlight on Dettori at his final Royal Ascot appearance due to his impending retirement, this historic achievement might be weighing on the minds of punters, generating a lot of attention and potentially influencing the market this year.
After all, something similar has happened before at Royal Ascot with Dettori.
Prices can crash when Frankie gets on a roll
Rewind to Royal Ascot 2019. The day started like any other. Dettori rode the first race on a horse named Al Ahli, which, against decent odds of 8.07/1, won the race. The second race mirrored the first, with Dettori riding to victory on Sangarius, coming in a slightly larger odds.
By this time, whispers of a trend began circulating, and when Dettori clinched the third race on Star Catcher, the market was set ablaze.
The prospect of a fourth win had punters scrambling, and the favourite for the fourth race, Dettori's horse Stradivarius, experienced a flurry of betting activity, causing its odds to shrink drastically from 2.757/4 to 2.01/1.
When trading on Betfair, you are looking to back at higher odds and cash out at lower ones, or vice versa. Backing with £100 at 2.75 and cashing out at odds of 2.0 would have netted you a £76 free bet on Stradivarius, or a £38 profit regardless of who went on to win the race, with no chance of a loss.
When Stradivarius raced to victory, the market went into overdrive! This was the moment I had been anticipating.
Four in a row causes market chaos
Dettori was to ride Turgenev in the fifth race. Turgenev's odds were relatively high at 15.014/1, but with Dettori's winning streak, I was confident they would shorten.
As expected, as soon as Stradivarius crossed the finish line, money started pouring in on Turgenev. The odds plummeted from 15.014/1 to 12.011/1, then to 7.513/2, and a late surge of money ensured the price shortened even more to a staggering 4.57/2.
Although I had predicted this movement in odds, I must admit the intensity surprised me. The market was in frenzy. Turgenev had almost a quarter of a million pounds backing him at 4.84/1 at one point.
Everyone was expecting another famous flying dismount. But, to their dismay, the race didn't go in Dettori's favour. Turgenev failed to clinch the win, causing widespread disappointment. In the post-race interview, even Dettori admitted that the pressure had gotten to him.
However, for me, this outcome meant a significant profit. I had successfully traded out at a lower price and hedged my position. My earnings from this race? Nearly £600!
But the story doesn't end there. The day's excitement had one more twist. The losses incurred by punters on Turgenev resulted in the price of Dettori's last horse of the day, Questionnaire, plummeting.
As Turgenev lost, however, the price bounced back out. So I saw this as another lucrative trading opportunity and seized it.
Reflecting on that day, the key to my success was not just understanding the mechanics of Betfair trading, but also staying attuned to the dynamics of the crowd, the hype around the jockey, and how these elements can influence the market.
It will happen again so be alert
Now, you might wonder how often such conditions occur. While I can't guarantee regular repeats, I can attest to the fact that similar sequences have occurred regularly at big race meetings in the past. The trick is to be observant and be ready to capitalise when they do arise.
The beauty of Betfair trading lies in its simplicity, but its real charm is its versatility. It can be as straightforward or as complex as you make it.
By keeping an eye on market trends and staying flexible in your approach, you open yourself up to opportunities that can result in straightforward yet profitable trades, much like my experience at Royal Ascot.
Here is hoping for some more Dettori magic this Royal Ascot new week.
