Captain Teague won by nine-and-a-half lengths for Paul Nicholls at Chepstow

In his first Ditcheat Diary exclusive of the 2023/24 National Hunt season Paul Nicholls reflects on a good start for Team Ditcheat at the weekend, with Captain Teague running out an impressive winner on his hurdling debut and Kap Boy winning his bumper...

Captain Teague won by nine-and-a-half lengths at Chepstow on Friday and Paul Nicholls is weighing up his options for where the five-year-old goes next.

Paul said: "For Captain Teague to win a Grade 2 on his hurdling debut was good, obviously. There is huge room for improvement for his jumping but he will only improve for that run.

"He will tell us where he will go throughout the season. I have to discuss it with his owner but I'm minded to say the obvious route would be for him to go to Cheltenham (for the Ballymore Novices' Hurdle trial) then to the Challow at Newbury (in December)."

There were promising runs from several of Paul's horses at the weekend, as he explained:

"Florencethematchine also produced a nice run on debut to finish second in the Mares' Novices Hurdle."

"Kap Boy is a nice, big and strong horse and won on his debut on Saturday. He will improve for the experience and will probably go to Ascot for the bumper in December.

"Knappers Hill was second on his debut over fences. The ground was softer than he would like but he jumped really nicely. He will go to Wincanton in three weeks when he will be sharper and the ground will be better.

"Sonigino ran well too. He just got caught out by the extra weight in the ground. As for what's next, I think his owners are quite keen to go chasing."

Paul Nicholls' plans for this week

Paul will be back on Friday to discuss his weekend runners in Ditcheat Decs but he gave an early insight into his plans:

"There are a few (of my horses) at Wincanton on Thursday.

"I have nice entries at Newton Abbot on Saturday, including Hermes Allen and it would be nice to run Complete Unknown. On Sunday at Kempton, Rubuad is going to run in the good hurdle race.

"But I will have to see what the weather does."
