Paul Nicholls: Betfair Ambassador 6/4 to be crowned Top Trainer after Super Saturday
Betfair Ambassador Paul Nicholls has shortened dramatically in the NH Top Trainer market after enjoying an incredible afternoon on Betfair Ascot Chase Day. Mike Norman has the details...
"The Betfair Sportsbook have opened a market for the Cheltenham Top Trainer with Henderson and Gordon Elliott currently sharing favouritism at 11/8. Willie Mullins can be backed at 11/4 with Nicholls currently priced at 10/1."
The Ditcheat handler saddled an incredible eight winners, at accumulative odds of 45,863/1, including landing the Betfair Denman Chase (Clan Des Obeaux) and the Betfair Ascot Chase (Cyrname) on a day he'll never forget.
Ten-time champion National Hunt trainer Nicholls was very confident about a number of his horses running well in his regular runners preview that goes live every Friday, but he perhaps couldn't have imagined that he'd land a five-timer at Ascot while also having a double at Wincanton and a winner at Haydock.
Nicholls now leads Nicky Henderson by over £120,000 in the Champion Trainer standings, and after being matched at [5.5] in the GB NH Top Trainer market earlier in the season he's now as short as [2.56] to win back the crown. Henderson is the [1.56] favourite.
Henderson fancied to establish a lead during Cheltenham
The big spring meetings are certain to play a leading role in the destination of the Trainers Championship and Henderson is likely to start his assault on the title during next month's Cheltenham Festival.
The defending champion will send a strong team of novice hurdlers to Prestbury Park but his big gains could come in the Champion Hurdle where Buveur D'Air will bid to land a hat-trick of victories, and the Queen Mother Champion Chase where Henderson will be confident of victory with the seemingly unbeatable Altior.
Santini in the RSA Chase is also a leading contender for the yard, while Might Bite will be hoping to find a bit of old sparkle in the Gold Cup.
Although Clan Des Obeaux is a well-fancied [6.0] second favourite for the Nicholls team in the Gold Cup, the Ditcheat handler is likely to pick up the bulk of his Cheltenham prizemoney in handicaps and juvenile races.

After Cheltenham, all roads will lead to the Grand National meeting at Aintree in April.
