Newbury is the sole turf meeting in the UK on Wednesday, with the other three meetings taking place on the all-weather, which prompted a quick calendar check by yours truly.

To confirm, we are still in August by the way, not November.

Anyway, it's to Berkshire we head for the first bet of the day and it comes in what looks like a competitive nursery to open the card.

Andrew Balding's Primal has got a bit about him physically and he didn't shape at all badly on his three qualifying runs in novice/maiden company before stepping into his first nursery last time. That was in a deeper affair than this one and he really caught the eye in fourth having met early interference before flying home at the death to be beaten just over two lengths.

The form of that contest doesn't look bad at all either, with the sixth-place finisher bagging a competitive nursery at the York Ebor meeting just last week, while a couple of the other beaten horses from it have gone on to run well in defeat.

This 0-75 contest represents a steep drop in grade from that 0-90 Goodwood race and Primal makes plenty of appeal with Oisin Murphy back in the saddle.

Aigeas probably hasn't been the easiest to train given the pattern he's shown in races to date, but he looked a potentially smart all-weather performer in the making over this C&D last time and I'm in no rush to oppose him on the follow-up, even though we've not seen him for 55 days since that devastating front-running effort.

Oliver Cole's charge was sent to France for his debut last season and created a big impression when taking a newcomers contest on the Deauville synthetic track.

On the back of that, he was pitched into listed company at Saint-Cloud on his second start but looked all at sea on the heavy ground that day.

The selection returned this season with another pair of lacklustre turf runs but he really took off returned to the all-weather here last time, suggesting he could simply be a much better performer on an artificial surface.

Aigeas absolutely hosed up that day and has been given plenty of time to get over what was a big effort.

Admittedly, this is a deeper race, but he'll take some stopping if turning up in the same sort of form.
