Handicap debutante makes appeal in the last
Every week from Thursday 19 September up to Thursday 14 November Betfair will be sponsoring Chelmford's Thursday evening cards. One of Betting. Betfair's horse racing tipsters will be putting up selections for each meeting and we are looking to see whether you can take them on.
19:00 Chelmsford - Back Cakewalk @ 5/16.00
Now 4lbs lower than her opening mark of 68, Cakewalk could put in her best effort yet as she drops in class in this mile-and-a-quarter contest.
The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained filly was an eye-catcher on debut when slowly away from a wide draw in a strung out field, pushed along to stay with the rest of the pack in the early stages before showing her stamina capabilities by staying on well late on.
The daughter of Sea The Stars was never in a position to threaten on that occasion and showed greenness on debut, but also shaped with promise and a sign that there should be plenty of further improvement to come.
Her next two starts were on a softer surface which may not have been to suit, but she was sent off as the 16/54.20 favourite on handicap debut at Beverley on her penultimate start, where a change of tactics from the front saw her weaken late on, before failing to give her running over an extra furlong at Kempton when last seen.
She isn't one to give up on, however, as if she is able to replicate the finishing effort on her first appearance, she could put together a string of wins from a low mark. Whilst she needs things to fall right for her, she has a favourable draw from stall four and has the potential to finally break her maiden tag under Harry Davies.

20:30 Chelmsford - Back Samra Star @ 15/28.50
Unexposed handicap debutante Samra Star is an intriguing runner as she drops back down in trip on her return to the all-weather following a disappointing effort at Goodwood in which she couldn't settle. She had previously beaten subsequent winner Islanova by two-lengths at Wolverhampton, which followed a fourth-placed effort on debut at the same track.
An eye-catcher in her first career start, she was slowly away but travelled strongly into the race before becoming short of room at a crucial stage, unable to mount a challenge until the leaders had achieved an unattainable advantage.
From an opening mark of 83, she could have plenty of further progression to come for Richard Hughes. The daughter of Magna Grecia has shown enough promise to suggest she could be capable of winning from her current rating, and she has proven she enjoys an all-weather surface over a similar trip previously.
The yard has been performing at a 25 percent strike-rate at track this year, with Finley Marsh achieving a 20 percent win-rate aboard their runners, and this filly could add to their tally in this contest.
