Kempton, 15:35: Back Lookaway EW four places @ 11/112.00

The best race from a punting point of view at Kempton is the 15:35 Ladbrokes Trophy Handicap Chase over 3m, and with 13 runners nowhere near the maximum allowed (where are you staying chasers, where are you?!), the four places on the Sportsbook looks worth some adventure.

Lookaway for Neil King was one of my antepost selections earlier this week, and from the 12/113.00 on Tuesday, my influence has moved the market significantly by a whole point four days later to 11/112.00. I am standing my ground.

I've had to knock my commitment for The Doyen Chief on the head for this race, in favour of a horse with exactly the same mark of 139, but I think he can nudge that up further and improve.

Lookaway could well improve for the 3m, that's what I am hoping. His entries for the Cheltenham Festival would suggest the trainer thinks he'll stay - with one for the 3m Ultima, and one also for the 3m2f Kim Muir.

He isn't short of pace, which is why I think Kempton might suit him, in particular his style of racing too as he tends to get on with things and as Macbeth observed "t'were best done quickly".

No doubt he was a lucky and fortunate winner at Kempton over 2m4f last time with the late exit of Old Cowboy stage left, but he was fighting back - which in the face of a severe and searching past offers hope he'll get 3m. Leader In The Park emptied with a race finishing speed of 93% behind Lookaway and Go West even more tired, chimed in with 90%.

Kempton, 16:05: Back Javert Allen EW three places @ 7/24.50

The name Nigel has been expunged from records virtually, as no one was named Nigel last year according to statistics. I am doing my bit for the Alans out there, likewise Jane Williams with all the Allen prefix runners and Javert Allen is one I've been loyal to - without success to now.

I was with the chaser last time at Cheltenham in the Betfair Exchange Handicap Chase over 2m4f worth over 55K to the winner.

He put in some great jumps around Prestbury Park when bowling along in front, and his front-running duties appeared too hot for fellow pacemakers Uncle Bert and Prairie Wolf, who once headed, finished well beaten in ninth and seventh, so Javert Allen deserves a little more credit for still going strong into the straight.

It was that punishing straight at Cheltenham that took its toll, as Jagwar and Donnacha moved well in behind with the Nigel Hawke Donnacha proving the strongest in the end, just. Javert Allen's third was honourable considering the first, second and fellow third all were held further off the pace.

He remains unexposed from a mark of 128, unchanged from Cheltenham, and while a fast-run 2m at Cheltenham could be his ultimate Festival aim (he holds an entry in the barnstorming Grand Annual), Kempton could suit his run style, much like Lookaway.
