"dropping back to a mile and the handicapper has eased her 2lbs, she looks the one to be on to me"

Alan Thompson has two selections today from the flat card at Newmarket and an old favourite over the jumps at Fontwell...

Sun Bear will enjoy dropping back to a mile

Owner Lady Bamford could have a big say in this, she has Sunset Kiss and Sun Bear running for her in this fillies handicap over a mile. The former made a spectacular return to racing after 371 days off to win at Wolverhampton last time out over seven furlongs. But, the three-year-old will find this handicap much more difficult and will have to step up again to win this, which is why I prefer her other runner today.

Talking about stepping up, the step up to ten furlongs was no help to Sun Bear last time out, she was travelling well up to the final furlong when she faded badly, while that was on soft ground I think it was the trip rather than the conditions that was her undoing and she's well worth another chance. Especially, as she is dropping back to a mile and the handicapper has eased her 2lbs, she looks the one to be on to me. She also placed on her debut (over eight and a half furlongs) on heavy and won over a mile at Windsor, so this looks more like her trip.

Waikiki Waves can win his own race at Fontwell

The Heart Of The South Racing Syndicate have obviously enjoyed their trips to Fontwell in the past, so much so that they have even sponsored today's race and put it in the name of their little horse with a big heart Waikiki Waves. The seven-year-old has proved to be a revelation since beginning his chasing career in January 2019. He has now won 5 races over the larger obstacles and has ran some respectable races in Class 3 company, his win in this race last year was his fourth win at his beloved Fontwell.

To be fair he is a little bit out of sorts at the moment and he wasn't at his best here just 18 days ago. But, this sounder surface than last time is a big plus, for all that he has won on soft, he much prefers better ground where four of his wins have come. He's now also just 3lbs above his last winning mark and this is his trip, so it could be a big day for all concerned. I am sure he has provided his owners with a lot of fun over fences and he is a horse that really does give his all in each of his races, at the price he is well worth an each way flutter.
