Horse Racing Tips: Mark Milligan with a trio to back on Friday

Mark Milligan says: Back He Knows Better in 15:47 Warwick
Two of Mark's Friday picks are on the all-weather

Mark Milligan has taken a look at Friday's racing and has three selections across two meetings...

15:47 Warwick - Back He Knows Better @ 5/23.50

This is an interesting handicap chase and recent winner House Of Habsburg looks sure to be popular coming on off a wide-margin win in a 10-runner novice handicap chase last time. However, while on the surface that looks impressive, dig deeper and you find that House Of Habsurg was one of only two finishers in a race that massively fell apart late on.

Throw in the fact that he didn't go with a great deal of fluency throughout the contest and I suspect he's worth taking on.

He Knows Better has only made two starts in chases and he looked sure to go close on his debut over the larger obstacles at Haydock in December, falling when well in contention two out.

He was also returning from 19 months off there.

The selection showed no ill effects from that comeback run when second at Huntingdon last time and this imposing sort looks the type to go one better here, particularly as he should be cherry-ripe on his third run back from that long break.

19:15 Southwell - Back Magic Stone @ 15/82.88

This 5f three-year-old handicap is a lot more interesting than most at this time of year and brings together a couple of well-bred and reasonably unexposed sorts who ought to have plenty more to offer.

Fortification cost a pretty penny at the breeze-ups so the decision to geld him probably wasn't taken lightly but it paid immediate dividends when he got off the mark at the third time of asking in a Wolverhampton novice in November.

Archie Watson's son of Mehmas did that readily and is clearly open to more progression but so too is the William Haggas-trained Magic Stone, who has already made a couple of handicap starts but wasn't seen to anything like best effect on the most recent one.

He finished third to Saffron Dandy that day but would have gone very close to winning had he not encountered a serious amount of trouble when making headway over a furlong from home.

His mark of 82 remains unchanged following that effort and it's not hard to see his shrewd handler exploiting that over the coming months.

20:15 Southwell - Back Karakula Dancer @ 6/42.50

We also have a fascinating three-year-old handicap (this time over 1m) to round off what looks a decent Friday evening card. This features another pair who are unexposed and on the up, including a rare raider at this track from the Joseph O'Brien yard.

Clearly anything sent over from that powerful stable commands plenty of respect at this level and Grey Sands appeared to benefit from the addition of a tongue tie when second on his handicap debut at Dundalk last time.

He isn't passed over lightly but he may have his hands full trying to contain recent winner Karakula Dancer, who found a chunk of improvement at Lingfield last time and now bids to defy a penalty.

It's hard to know exactly where that improvement came from, but the selection was returning from a four-month hiatus and it could just be that he needed a little while to strengthen up.

His pedigree is a good one for a horse operating at this basement level and it would be no surprise were he to go in again now he's up and running.
