My Girl Katie can make the frame at Ludlow
Olly Murphy-trained Kapal Layar is an interesting contender in the two-mile novices' hurdle at Kempton on the back of a third-placed finish in a Carlisle bumper last month. He was sent off as 9/43.25 favourite at Kelso in April in a race that was eventually voided, and returned from a 185-day break in good order but shaping as though he should improve plenty for the run and for the switch to obstacles.
The five-year-old son of Milan became outpaced as the race developed, pushed along by jockey Sean Bowen to maintain his position at the rear of the field. He responded well to his rider's encouragement, and the penny dropped half a furlong from the line as he sprinted home, bridging the gap on the eventual first and second who had pulled clear.
The winner that day, Blue Carpet, is a promising son of Blue Bresil who fetched £50,000 and is a brother to Listed winning hurdler Yosille, whilst the runner-up Jet To Vegas, a £80,000 purchase following a point victory, has since finished second to We're Red And Blue who has form with promising geldings Wade Out and Knight Of Allen, both of whom have shown a high level of ability.
Kapal Layar's dam Shees A Dante is a half-sister talented Grade One winner God's Own and Ginny's Destiny, as well as Working Title who once won a novice hurdle over this course-and-distance. She has also produced black-type achieving mare Nina The Terrier, a full-sister to Kapal Layar.
On pedigree, this trip should suit but a step up to two-and-a-half-miles could also be within his capabilities. He should improve plenty for his first completed start and return to action, and he is one to follow for an in-form yard who have 32 percent strike-rate in novice hurdles this term.
The stable are currently performing at a 30 percent success-rate, too, which is a positive, and Kapal Layar could spring a small surprise to continue the trainer's rich vein of form at odds of 11/26.50.
Back Kapal Layar in 13:00 Kempton
My Girl Katie has been dropping significantly down the weights having been rated as high 103 twelve months ago. She now runs from a rating of 77 which should allow her to run well under Conor Ring.
On her penultimate start she finished a respectable fifth over course-and-distance at odds of 18/119.00, showing improvement on her previous starts following a 102-day break. She was unable to build on that effort at Chepstow when last seen, upped in trip, but the drop back in distance in familiar surroundings should see her to better effect and she makes each-way appeal with four places available.
The seven-year-old mare is 9lbs lower than when achieving a third-placed finish at Stratford in May, having placed from a mark of 105 last year. At the weights, she appears on a workable mark from which she can make the frame.
Representing Grace Harris who has a decent record at the track, My Girl Katie warrants a second look at odds of 9/110.00.
