Goodwood

Goodwood is the name of a racecourse in West Sussex that hosts flat racing. Its flagship meeting each year is Glorious Goodwood, an event which attracts some of the best horses in Europe.

The actual racecourse is controlled by the Duke of Richmond, who owns the Goodwood Estate.

Due to the high-quality racing that takes places at Goodwood, it is regarded as one of the Grade One courses in the UK.

Glorious Goodwood is one of the highlights on the flat calendar because it features two of the 31 Group One races. It takes place each year in late July or early August. 
One of those contests is the Nassau Stakes, which has been running since 1840 and is open to fillies and mares that are three-years-old or over. The official distance is one mile, one furlong, and 192 yards. It is named in honour of the House of Orange-Nassau, which was occupied by the 5th Duke of Richmond. It got promoted to Group One status in 1999.

The first ever winner of the Nassau Stakes was Rosa Bianca in 1840, while Midday holds the record for the most number of wins with three to her name after coming out of top in 2009, 2010 and 2011. 

The late Sir Henry Cecil trained Midday and her victory in 2011 was his eighth in this contest. Based in Newmarket, Cecil was renowned for his success with fillies. Roussalka landed both the 1975 and 1976 runnings of this Group One. Connaught Bridge gave him further success in 1979, while Nom de Plume and Lyphard's Delta added to his list of winners in 1987 and 1993 respectively.

The Sussex Stakes is open to any horse aged three or over. It is run over the trip of one mile and was inaugurated in 1841.

Frankel is the only runner in history to have won the Sussex Stakes more than once. At the age of three he succeeded in this race in 2011 following a win in the 2000 Guineas and at Royal Ascot. Then, in what proved to be his final year in training, he defended his crown in 2012.

The other notable race run at Goodwood is the Stewards Cup. This is a sprint that takes place across a straight six furlongs, starting uphill in the first furlong and then going down a hill in the final stages. It has taken place on the final day of Glorious Goodwood since 1993.
