I'm hoping that Principality is capable of at least reaching the frame. The four-year-old has had a productive season, winning twice from four starts, including last time out at Newmarket's July course. Despite not scoring from this career-high mark, he ought to go close if maintaining his good spell here. Soft ground would certainly not inconvenience him, and his Goodwood record of 1-4-1-0-4 is a big positive.
NON-RUNNER
I'm a massive fan of course-and-distance form at Beverley, where it often pays to sit prominently. Shagraan won this race last term, and although this appears a stronger Listed renewal on paper he holds a solid chance once again. That success was a second Listed win last term, and he arrives in decent heart. His last two form figures can largely be forgiven, finishing downfield in a Group 1, followed by being hampered in a Sandown Group 3. If he can sit up with the pace from a wide draw, I feel his chance is upgraded, and he has the ability to reach the frame.
I'm giving Fantasy Maker more of a chance than the bookmakers currently do to finish in the placings in Yarmouth's feature race on the card, the 5f sprint handicap. The eight-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the race, as an eight-time winner. He showed the benefit of a short break with a solid second on Newmarket's July course last time. He is 5lb below his peak winning form so has the back class to have a shade more to give from a handicapping perspective, and he races from a low weight here. Any rain which falls in the Great Yarmouth area would be a bonus.
Don't sleep on Lavender Gold's chances in the 1m2f handicap to conclude Goodwood's Sunday card. David Menuisier clearly targets his local track, and the pair were on the scoresheet at this venue in June (on soft ground). A change of tactics worked that day as he made all of the running, and despite being 6lb higher he is lightly raced and has scope for further improvement on just his third turf handicap start. You can forgive his downfield effort on the all-weather at Newcastle last time as he bled during the race.
