Trainer Ralph Beckett has a good record at Chelmsford

Alan Dudman previews the feature race at Chelmsford this evening as part of his Thursday double...

  • Sir Benedict should be fine on soft ground

  • Beckett 39% placed record at Chelmsford

  • Alan Dudman goes for a 44/145.00 double on Wednesday

Redcar - 15:17: Back Sir Benedict

A case can be made for plenty in the 15:17 5f Handicap but the price of 6/17.00 for Sir Benedict looks worth a play considering the open nature of the race.

He landed back-to-back wins at Southwell in March - winning from 47 and 50, and his first was off a career low mark which he took advantage of in a weak race.

Plenty of cover suits him, or at least a pace to run at and with the prevailing soft conditions, his ability to see out 5f well should see him go close - that's the thinking anyway.

Last time out he ran at Bath in heavy conditions and travelled a bit closer to the pace, which worked against him in the end as two of the first four came from further back. Indeed the winner had a fair bit to do.

Acting on heavy on that occasion will serve him well today and he can still be a force off this basement mark.

Chelmsford - 19:30: Back Queen Of Mougins

Trainer Ralph Beckett has a decent record at Chelmsford at 22% win and 39% placed, and Queen Of Mougins looks overpriced at 11/26.50 for the Listed feature.

This is a good race - a rarity for the track, but Beckett's filly can hopefully be a lot wiser and more streetwise as she looked very green and inexperienced when upped in grade for a Group 3 at Salisbury last September behind the battle hardened Juniper Berries.

Dorothy Lawrence was second in that race and she's rated 100.

The selection won her debut last season at Newbury so there's a plus that she won first time out, although she was green again in the closing stages.

The Beckett yard are quiet at the moment and without a winner from 21 runners, but there is sure to be improvement from her.
