Mandobi can bounce back after luckless Ascot defeat

Supreme King lived up to his name slightly more than Legend Of Dubai for yesterday's selections, but seconditis continues to plague the column. On with Wednesday's show.

We're top and tailing the card at Goodwood on Day 2 and Mandobi is a big enough price to tempt me in despite running way below market expectations last time out.

He was beaten 8L in a red-hot King George V Handicap, but a wide trip from a hopeless draw put paid to any chances. If you're trapped out wide at Ascot over 1m4f in a big field, you've no chance. Indeed, he was pushed further wide coming into the straight.

The ground could have been a bit too lively too as he didn't look totally at ease on the fast surface. His dam is by Monsun, the great German stallion, and his progeny do prefer easier ground.

This race goes to a stayer traditionally, and William Haggas has won this before with Dal Harraild. He's worth another chance after the Ascot race and Haggas remains in top nick with with 11 winners from his last 29 runners at 39%.

Old firm to team up with Wild Lion

Watching Glorious Goodwood on the Beeb in the late 1990s and 2000s harks bark to a bygone era when Frankie Dettori rode for Saeed bin Suroor, on board some elite horses.

Wild Lion certainly isn't elite, but the old firm team up for one of the handicaps and can build on a fine comeback at Leicester last time out.

A messy race there on rain-softened ground slightly blunted the run, as previously he'd won over 1m at Newcastle, so there were certainly excuses. But on his first run back after a break of 260 days, he should come on as he competes in the same grade - albeit a much tougher calibre of opponent.

He had looked a progressive 3yo winning twice at Newcastle, but he is most interesting on his juvenile form as he ran in a strong Newmarket Maiden against Dhahabi and New Mandate - both three-figure rated horses.

Good to firm suits, so hopefully they don't over-water. He hit 1.454/9 in the run at Leicester and he should fare better in a big field with plenty of pace and could be a lot better than a mark of 85 given his unexposed profile.
