Scotsman to have a major say in the Richmond

Back Royal Scotsman @ 2.47/5 in the 14:25 at Goodwood

Trainer Paul Cole knows what it takes to win the Richmond Stakes with success three times from 1985 with Nomination, Dilum and latterly Sri Pekan, and Royal Scotsman looks to have an excellent chance for the yard to end their 26 year wait in the contest.

I put up this horse as an each-way selection at Royal Ascot when finishing third at a BSP of 16.015/1 and the form of the Group 2 Coventry looked strong at the time, and stronger now as the second and fourth have both subsequently won Group 2s.

He might have made his move for home too soon, and the clock would certainly back that up with his slowest sectional by some way coming in the final furlong. The stiff finish too might not have helped, and a speedier track like Goodwood has already proved to be beneficial with his 5L Novice won previously - a victory that came on easier ground but the times were pretty impressive considering the softer surface.

Indeed, all through his three starts he has looked good and his debut fourth at Ascot in May was another that earned an upgrade on the clock.

Proven track form is a huge plus and he does hold entries in the Gimcrack and the Champagne later in the season.

Back New London @ 3.02/1 in the 15:00 at Goodwood

New London for Charlie Appleby is another horse that has appeared on these pages this season, most notably when trouncing a field last time out in a Newmarket handicap.

He won that off 99, shooting clear on the July course to stamp himself down as a Group horse for the future. It was easy to see why he was one of Appleby's Derby hopes with his size, physique, pedigree and run style. His Chester Vase flop was at a short price, but he hated the track and turns there and looked immature. The soft surface didn't help either.

At least HQ proved once again New London is a quick ground horse, and his 11.09 penultimate sectional was excellent.

Appleby trained the dam of this horse Bright Beacon, and she's turned into a rather good broodmare with three of her four offspring all winning. Rider William Buick has an excellent record at Goodwood and already has three on the board (and a second) at the meeting so far and is operating at 38%.

Leger and Arc entries are very interesting, so we shouldn't have to worry about the step up again to 1m4f.
