Command the number one pick and you can play two for a double in the same race
Back Lawful Command @ 13.012/1 in the 15:00 at Goodwood
A winning double yesterday with both New London and Royal Scotsman storming to victory. Two good horses, bred to be good and bred to improve that did just that. A lacklustre July seemed bereft of any of these horses on the tipping front, so hopefully we can kick-start a good run following plenty of seconds. On we go to Friday.
I am struggling to remember the last time I backed and tipped a Brian Meehan horse. I'd love to say it was Crowded House, but it's certainly a long time ago. However, his Lawful Command was a bit weak in the betting last night on the Sportsbook, and I don't mind that with the 12/1 price and the Extra Place Special.
He has been labelled a soft ground horse, or certainly looks to have the profile of a handicapper that likes a bit of dig, but his fifth in the Britannia at Royal Ascot on a lively surface (very lively) doesn't dissuade me from getting involved.
Meehan's runner was down the centre track and raced a little keenly from a prominent position. The race looked as though it suited those coming from further back, but it was a solid effort from a mark of 87 in going down by just over 2L.
The big pointer for Lawful Command is his Goodwood record however, as he's 2-2 over CD and with a low draw in 4, it looks ideal for George Rooke to have him out early with some speed, as he has cut out the running to win at the track before.
His time figures put him bang there, and I will favour him by eschewing the opportunity to back Saeed bin Suroor's Shining Blue who is unbeaten in three starts. I've made a promise to myself to no longer be sucked into those unexposed types with the profile. Roger Varian's too.
On the Sportsbook you can also play on two horses in the same race to place for a multiple, and backing Unlawful Command and Jimi Hendrix (who beat him at Newmarket last time) pays out a rather generous 5.63463/100 with six places.
Look over to Hills for sprint success
Back Equilateral @ 10.09/1 in the 15:35 at Goodwood
The big sprint over the flying 5f at 15:35 looks very open with no particular standout. If one of those top Aussies turned up for this with a penalty, they'd hose up.
I am hoping Equilateral can do something vaguely along those lines, as on his day he is a talented customer. And when he is on that day, he can look a real classy runner. His win record still isn't bad for a speedster that has held a rating in three figures since 2018. So he should be appreciated.
His Meydan form from last term was very good - running to 112, and while he races a bit of 6f, he has plenty of natural pace and zip for a quick 5f. It will be interesting to find out as this will be his first try over the Goodwood plains.
