Appleby's cheekpieces stats worth closer inspection
Back New Kingdom @ 9.08/1 in the 15:45 at Doncaster
Equilateral somewhat let the side down (again) in pursuit of a double for yesterday's column but Prakasa's tidy victory ensured the 12th winner in last 13 days for this page. Prakasa also drifted out to a rather nice 11/4.
Hopefully two will land on the same day soon.
On to Doncaster for Thursday and we lead off with the Charlie Appleby headgear stat as New Kingdom runs in the first-time cheekpieces. The Godolphin trainer has a strike-rate of 21% win, and 41% placed when applying cheekpieces and it's even higher for all headgear at nearly 23%. He is 17% with cheekpieces at Donny.
New Kingdom can get back on the winning trail off top weight after a no-show at York last time - but he wouldn't be the first to run badly there. There are York horses, and there aren't, and he isn't one.
He has had two runs since being gelded earlier in the season and he settled better at Newmarket behind Jimi Hendrix in a decent 0-100 while the slow pace at Goodwood previously went against him. They will certainly go quicker with the drop down to 7f here, and that could be of great benefit.
Funny Story to provide Havana Grey with another 2yo winner
Back Funny Story @ 3.55/2 in the 17:05 at Chelmsford
There was nothing chucklesome about the performance of Funny Story last time at Newbury, and for the followers of Ralph Beckett's 2yo filly that day who witnessed a complete flop, it could be a chance to gain some compensation at Chelmsford tonight.
Indeed, I was an advocate of her chances in the St Hugh's Listed contest, and having moved fairly sweetly early on, her race came to an abrupt end and stopped as if something was wrong. She finished last of 10.
She had previously won at Newmarket and clocked a fair time that day in her Maiden in comparison to the July Stakes, and ran 10.68 and 10.81 sectionals two and three from home. The time 1:12:26s was not too far behind the earlier Group race.
The form is a bit muddling from the race, the second is now rated in the high 90s but might not be worth the lofty rating, but at least the sixth has won.
Funny Story is by Havana Grey, a sire who is making a big impact this term in his freshman campaign with bundles of winners - 26 individual ones so far, and many rattling up sequences like Lady Hollywood's four.
He may be the fastest line in the Galileo family, but his stock are tough and Havana Grey is on course to record a best-ever first-season sire record and he's 5-33 on the AW so far from his sons and daughters, but 0-2 at Chelmsford.
Hopefully Funny Story can rectify that and I am backing her to bounce back with a drop back into Novice company. With the Racing League continuing tonight too; click here to read Daryl Carter's preview of action tonight at Southwell.
