Al Dancer a big chance after Aintree November win
Conby run in Coral Cup puts him in the frame
Back Captain Conby @ 8/1 in the 14:20 at Aintree
Day two for the Aintree meeting and with four Extra Place Special races it's certainly a day for going with the each-way angle, and Captain Conby's Cheltenham effort in the Coral Cup puts him in the mix for the start of the double.
The 6yo was beaten around 12L behind Langer Dan last month and he travelled so well into contention, he traded at 2.26/5 in-running. However, the soft ground over 2m5f, and a stiffer track, blunted his finishing effort and it appeared that he didn't last home.
He's back to 2m4f and faces a less severe test. Both plusses.
These big fields hold no worries either as he finished second at Punchestown on New Year's Day - a terrific effort from 133. He went up 10lb for that, but still travelled as though he was ahead of that mark at Prestbury Park.
He's in the right age bracket too; as four of the last 10 renewals of this handicap have gone to 6yos.
Thomas chaser a huge player with Sefton win
Back Al Dancer @ 8/1 in the 16:05 at Aintree
Tackling the Topham and the Grand National fences with Al Dancer is our next play, and we've got a similar sort of price on Sam Thomas' chaser, and the Welsh handler has shown this season he's been a force in the big races with his fencers.
He won the Grand Sefton back in November - his only start of the season, and I am not too worried about him coming into this race as a fresh horse with 160 days off the track.
Al Dancer put in a decent round of jumping in Liverpool and he renews rivalry with Gesskille - whom he beat a nose and opposes again as the favourite here - just.
He was a very smart novice rated in the 150s in his younger days, and with his Grand Sefton victory, that experience is crucial. It worked for Mac Tottie (last year's winner), who had previously won the Sefton.
The selection was backed from 9/1 into 8/1 this morning, and again we have the Extra Place Special race on the Sportsbook.
