Illucidate is overpriced at Ludlow
Only four horses line up in the juvenile hurdle at Ludlow and Royal Way heads the market. He started his career on the flat in France and has run to a fair level in two starts over hurdles since joining Gary Moore but it's a horse who was more talented on the flat appeals at the prices.
Illucidate had four starts on the flat in France for Henri-Francois Devin and achieved a rating that is the equivalent of 79 in Britain. She ran well on debut at Chantilly when splitting a pair of fillies that went on to be placed at Listed level and ran in a similarly strong maiden next time at Saint Cloud which was won by subsequent Group 2 winner Rue Boissonade.
Illucidate ran disappointingly next time at Moulins but given that she was off the track for nearly five months after that it is likely that she had a problem that day that caused the poor performance.
She bounced back on her final start in France when making all the running at Lignieres, holding off the challenge of Anagallis late on.
That run was below her best but it was coming after a break so she might have needed it and that was still a higher level than Royal Way achieved on the flat. Physically, Illucidate looks the type to take to hurdling as she now has her first start in this sphere for Amy Murphy having been bought for 21,000gns.
There is the obvious unknown over how she will jump but they have found her a moderate race for her hurdling debut and she looks to have a good chance. She has shortened in the market but the early prices were simply way off and she is still too big now. Any 4/15.00 or bigger appeals.
