"Take Droopys Dresden to fire red back into the hot seat in heat five (20:29) with Phil Simmonds charge another set to benefit from a switch to the inside"
It's the night when all the remaining candidates come together for the first time and the pressure is firmly turned up with three races in the next eight days for the survivors before the six finalists are revealed in a week's time.
There have been relatively few surprises thus far but as the screw is turned expect some less predictable results. For those remaining, qualification - a place in the first three - is key which opens up the betting with every chance of the odd big price winner or two. But which ones?
Shadow chasing Wildcat ?
Probably not in heat six (20:47) where defeat for Dorotas Wildcat really would throw the cat among the pigeons but after comfortably accounting for puppy sensation Droopys Verve last week the omens appear good for Kev Hutton's charge who has bagged another favourable inside draw. His odds, however, will offer scant reward for supporters so marry him up with Newinn Shadow, only just behind the hotpot in the first round, in a straight forecast for a more productive payday.
Swithins a Brae-v shout ?
Bruisers Bullet took the scalp of hot youngster Rising Brandy last week and the draw has again thrown them together in heat four (20:13) but with Matt Dartnall's Monmore Puppy Derby winner now on the inside it's unlikely to be plain sailing for the ante-post hotpot and I'd fancy Brandy to take his revenge. But for a value punt don't ignore 2017 semi-finalist Swithins Brae who has been crying out for a rails draw and can take advantage at a decent price.
Dresden will enjoy inside switch
The Inside draw has fared surprisingly poorly in the Derby so far, but trap one was the number one box in the Derby last year and remains the winning most box in Opens over CD in 2018 and might be set fair for a good night. Take Droopys Dresden to fire red back into the hot seat in heat five (20:29) with Phil Simmonds' charge another set to benefit from a switch to the inside especially with middle favouring King Elvis drawn in the neighbouring box.
Red hot Turbo in pole?
Less obvious from the rails box is Honour Turbo in heat two (19:36) but having secured a first round win from red he's another set to benefit from a return to the inside and can account for more fancied rivals on just his third start after a six-month absence. Probable favourite Dorotas Vic and likely market danger Knockard Spring boast just one CD win between them from eleven tries and can be opposed.
Surprise winner in the 19:56
Sporting Dave has hit form at just the right time and has solid claims in heat three (19:56) although holding speedy Whoops Jack won't be easy and we're calling on red again with Karlow Scolar, closely related to 2017 Derby winner Astute Missile, and ideally berthed inside middle moving Cooneen Jack, to spring the surprise.
Get on the Biker
Droopys Biker looked a completely different proposition from the wide draw last week and is hard to oppose in heat seven (21:03) where kennelmate Borna Gin may prove the biggest threat.
Winning start for Wallis
Droopys Verve is drawn to advantage in heat eight (21:22) but with little upside in terms of price a chance is taken on Oi Oi Upenalty whose Towcester potential remains untapped and is worth a punt at a backable price. However, we are firmly rolling in with the probable favourite in heat one (19:16) where Bombers Bullet is expected to keep his unbeaten Towcester record intact and can get Mark Wallis, trainer of a colossal five winners in the last round, off to the perfect start again.
Bombers Bullet 19:16
Honour Turbo 19:36
Droopys Dresden 20:29
Droopys Biker 21:03
