Following a one-year absence, the South African Open returns to the DP World Tour schedule.

South Africa's national open has been part of the 'European' calendar since 1997, and was due to continue this lengthy run 12 months ago.

But the sudden return of the Covid virus, and the emergence of the Omicron variant in southern Africa during November of last year, meant the tournament was swiftly pulled from the DP World Tour's itinerary.

It did, however, remain on South Africa's Sunshine Tour and was staged at Gary Player Country Club in Sun City.

This year's event will take place at Blair Atholl Golf & Equestrian Estate in Lanseria, which is a suburb north-west of Johannesburg city centre.

Course Details

Blair Atholl has never staged the national open before, and only made its Sunshine Tour debut in October 2021.

However, there is still plenty of history attached to this famous course, having once been part of a farm owned by nine-time major champion Gary Player.

Indeed, it was Player who designed the course across the estate's rolling countryside, with the venue hosting the Blair Atholl Championship last year.

The course is long, with water coming into play on 10 holes.

Four To Watch

Oliver Bekker: The consistent 37-year-old is yet to win on the DP World Tour but remains a solid performer on home soil. A seven-time winner on the Sunshine Tour, he tied-for-13th at the Joburg Open on Sunday.

Louis De Jager: Another strong home pro who has won five times on the Sunshine Tour. He finished fifth at Houghton Golf Club over the weekend.

Romain Langasque: Posted a top-10 finish in Johannesburg on Sunday which was his sixth on the DP World Tour this year. Half of these T10s have been in South Africa, the other two back in March.

Thriston Lawrence: One of the few leading players teeing-up this week to have competed at Blair Atholl previously. Finished sixth there in October of last year.
