Although the Farmers Insurance Open hasn't been a great event for long-shots historically, three of the last four winners have been matched at a triple-figure price before the off so I've picked out one outsider in this week=s PGA Tour event.
It's impossible to make a case for Sami Valimaki on the strength of last week's missed cut in the American Express but if we can forgive his 2026 pipe opener, there's a lot to like about the 27-year-old Finn.
Valimaki, who has won twice on the DP World Tour, finished 2025 off in style on the PGA Tour, finishing second in the World Wide Technology Championship and 18th in Bermuda before winning the RSM Classic in convincing fashion in the final event of the year.
This is his third appearance in the Farmers Insurance Open and it's a tournament he's shown a liking to already.
He finished 43rd on debut two years ago after missed cuts in the Sony Open and the American Express and 15th last year after another weekend off at the American Express.
Last week's event is clearly not to his liking so we can expect a big improvement here and with the assignment of the recently favourable North Course-South Course draw rotation over the first two days, he looks overpriced.
As many as six of the last seven winners have begun the event on the North Course so that looks a great place to start for the improving Finn.

The 34-year-old Portuguese, Ricardo Gouveia, is yet to win on the DP World Tour and that's quite surprising given his prolific record on the HotelPlanner Tour.
With seven victories between 2014 and 2023, only Iain Pyman, who won eight titles between 1999 and 2008, has more wins on what was previously called the Challenge Tour.
Winning on the DP World Tour is undoubtedly a step up but it's one Gouveia maybe about to make if his current form is anything to go by and I'm happy to chance him in this week's event - the Bahrain Championship.

He was tied for the lead with a round to go at the Australian PGA Championship at the end of November before a 72 on Sunday saw him end the week in eighth place so it was no surprise to see him miss the cut the following week in the Australian Open but he bounced back to form in his first event of the year last week when he finished seventh in the Dubai Desert Classic.
Gouveia missed the cut here on debut two years ago, but he signed off last year's edition with a 67 on Sunday to climb up into 21st.

There hasn't been a Japanese winner on the DP World Tour in almost two years which is a bit of a surprise given it's not too long ago that we witnessed four Japanese players winning on the DP World Tour in the space of seven months.
Following Ryo Hisatsune's victory at the Open de France in September 2023, Rikuya Hoshino won the Qatar Masters in February 2024, Keita Nakajima won the Indian Open at the end of March 2024 and Yuto Katsuragawa won the ISPA Handa Championship in his homeland a month later. Maybe we're due another and Kota Kaneko looks a likely candidate.
The 23-year-old won twice in Japan last year, including a six-stroke victory in the Taiheiyo Masters as recently as November last year.
He signed the year off with a seventh-place finish in the Nippon Series JT Cup and he opened up 2026 with rounds of 69 and 67 in his first appearance in the Sony Open on the PGA Tour to sit tied for 28th and just five off the lead.
He slipped to 73rd over the weekend but havening finished 33rd in the Baycurrent Classic in his homeland in October, that was only his second start on the PGA Tour.
This is Kaneko's first appearance on the DP World Tour so it will be interesting to see how he fares, but I was happy to chance him at a juicy price.
With five thirds and two wins in his last 23 starts on the Japan Tour, he's a rapidly improving youngster with a bright future and he may just be the next Japanese to get off the mark on the DP World Tour.
