City enter new era with tough test
There is something actually rather enticing about this Community Shield, which isn't always the case.
Usually, the curtain-raiser comes with the usual caveat: don't read too much into it. It's pre-season, players aren't quite up to speed, managers are experimenting and the real business starts a week later.
I'm not so sure we can file this one under that category.
Manchester City begin life after Pep Guardiola.
Not a friendly. Not a behind-closed-doors warm-up. Their first competitive game of a new era comes against the side who have just ended their reign at the top of the Premier League. Enzo Maresca could hardly have asked for a more challenging first test. This City side is embarking on one of the biggest managerial transitions in Premier League history.
It's a fascinating thing to analyse and bet on.
And then there is Arsenal, who are 20/231.87 to lift the trophy here with the Betfair Sportsbook.
The psychological landscape has changed significantly for Mikel Arteta's side which bodes well for their chances of more silverware this season.
For years, the question was whether Arsenal could actually get over the line when the pressure reached boiling point. Now they have done it. They are Premier League champions.
They no longer need convincing that they belong at the top table. They know they can win the big one.
That makes this more than a glorified pre-season game.
It's the first opportunity for City to show that the Guardiola era ending doesn't mean their dominance is ending with it. And for Arsenal, it's a chance to reinforce the idea that last season wasn't an isolated breakthrough, but the beginning of something much bigger.
Trends say favour the unders
The Community Shield is a fixture where the over 2.5 goals button probably gets a little more attention than it deserves.
You'd be forgiven for thinking goals are almost guaranteed due to the nature of the fixture which does have an air of exhibition about it.
But the history of this game tells us to hit the brakes when it comes to goals.
The average number of goals scored in Community Shield finals over the last 15 years is only 2.6 per game with seven of the last 10 copping for under 2.5 goals backers.
Betfair have priced the market almost perfectly symmetrically, with 20/231.87 available on both over 2.5 and under 2.5. That's effectively saying there is very little to choose between the two outcomes.
I'm inclined to look towards the unders with the way the market is shaped.
Arsenal's success is built on an excellent defensive platform that saw them concede just 0.72 goals per game across all competitions last season and their title win was underpinned by an ability to control games rather than turn every match into a shootout.
This game could meander down that avenue and if so, the unders has a fine chance of landing.
Play your cards right
Arsenal against Manchester City sounds like, on paper, a recipe for cards. Two elite teams, plenty of history, a trophy at stake and no shortage of competitive tension.
But the evidence suggests we shouldn't automatically translate that into bookings.
The previous 12 Community Shields have produced an average of just 2.3 cards per 90 minutes. That's a pretty significant number when the line for this one is set at 3.5.
We can take a bit of 4/51.80 on Under 3.5 cards - that's a price worth respecting. It's a bet that has landed in seven of the last eight Community Shields.

There is a broader refereeing trend which makes the bet even more interesting and is on my mind for the start of the season. The 2026 World Cup was remarkably light on yellow cards with only 2.56 yellow cards shown per 90 minutes, the lowest rate recorded at a World Cup this century.
I'm not suggesting that means referees have suddenly forgotten what their cards are for. But it does reinforce the idea that the modern interpretation is increasingly about letting football flow rather than reaching for the pocket at the first opportunity.
And that's particularly relevant to a game like the Community Shield.
Referees know this isn't a normal Premier League fixture. It's a competitive match, yes, but it's also effectively the final dress rehearsal before the serious business starts. Let's hope referee Tom Bramall plays to that narrative.
