Euro 2012 Betting: Capello plots to stop Tottenham winger

It is no secret that Gareth Bale is the Wales player that England fear most, but the level of praise that Fabio Capello offered the winger was a surprise.

There haven't been many occasions in this qualifying campaign that Fabio Capello has felt obliged to talk up the talents of an opposition player, however the England boss has admitted that he is wary of the threat that Gareth Bale poses to his side tonight.

Some sense that, despite the Three Lions' 3-0 stroll in Bulgaria, Wales are visiting at a good time having just claimed their first victory of the process against Montenegro, while the hosts are winless in four at Wembley, and Bale is the man Capello fears could exploit any vulnerability.

The Italian tactician said: "Bale always makes a difference. He is a really, really, important player for Wales. We need to find a system to stop him and stop people passing to him. We need to be very careful every time he receives the ball.

"It will be a problem to stop him because it is difficult when he receives the ball and attacks the space. He's fast and technically he is fantastic. He can play left or right - a very good player."

Capello has suggested that he will change his strategy for the match in response to the trouble his team have had breaking opponents down at their national stadium, but it will almost certainly still be Chris Smalling starting at right back and charged with stopping Bale.

The Tottenham star is judged Wales' fourth most likely goalscorer at 11.010/1 behind strikers Robert Earnshaw [8.27/1], Steve Morison [8.88/1] and Simon Church [9.417/2], though he has only struck three times for his country before, and just once in the last four years.

It is therefore his ability to create for others that is a greater concern for an England side who have conceded in six of their last eight games in the capital, yet as Wales have been shut out in three of their last four away fixtures, they remain heavily fancied to keep a clean sheet at 1.645/8.
