Michael Vaughan: English Test cricket is in a real mess

Richard Goode did an interview when it was announced saying that the results haven't been good enough, so they had to make the change, but I'd say that if you look back at the last six months, England lost the Ashes around January 8th and that was the time to make the change. By carrying on, it's created a load of chaos.

No one envisaged at the start of the summer what has happened with Ben Stokes. No one. They must have known, though, that on January 8th, the Test team have lost the Ashes and not performed brilliantly for a while. If you're sat round the table saying, 'look we're going to stick with the same management group up to the next Ashes which is next summer, surely, you're saying 'if it goes wrong against New Zealand, we have to be strong.'

We've now lost our captain, best player and someone who gives us balance and now we've got rid of our coach. The delay has confused things massively.

I think that method at Trent Bridge on the Sunday afternoon was the final straw. There's been murmurings for a while that people would fancy a different head coach, but I felt on that Sunday going into Monday, there weren't many pundits that were protecting Baz McCullum as a Test match coach after what we saw at Trent Bridge.

I think the players love him. They absolutely adore him. Harry Brook said recently that he's done a phenomenal job. A phenomenal job is W27 L20 and had two draws in his 49 Test matches as an England coach. Losing 20 out of 49. I guess what Harry means by phenomenal is giving the players the enjoyment of playing cricket because results aren't there.

Rob Key will now appoint the Test match coach who will be coming in to work with Baz McCullum the white ball coach and we know the relationship that Baz and Keys have. It's now a real mess. It's messier than if you'd have just said 'look, Baz McCullum carries on. Him and Harry go to the end of the Ashes and we'll see how it works out.'

The Stick To Cricket panel debates England's next Test coach

Alastair Cook: "Knowing Flower, could he work with McCullum and not have total say in everything? I couldn't see that. If it goes badly wrong for a young English coach like Batty or Dawson, I think it's too hard. The respect of a senior overseas coach, for whatever reason, gets a slightly better ride."

David Lloyd: "If it were me, I'd have a very experienced guy at the top with an up-and-coming, well-respected young kid like Dawson alongside. If it were someone like Andy Flower, he'd impart knowledge onto a younger coach."

Michael Vaughan: "Why not go to Andy Flower and say, 'what does it take for you to run English cricket?' If the ECB want the best, it's going to cost. Andy Flower over the last few years has probably been the best white ball coach in the world, so why wouldn't you want him running the whole operation?

"At least have the conversation and ask him what it would take for him to run English cricket. He may turn around and say he's happy doing the London Spirit and have no interest in coming back to English cricket. He's been there and done it, and why would he put himself through the stress at 58 years old."

Alastair Cook: "You need someone with a big personality to go in and handle the situation, because it's a big situation and not an easy one."

Alastair Cook: Andy Flower can't coach England and RCB in the IPL

Knowing Andy, if he's in a job, he's in it properly. He won't just do a job half-heartedly. If he's doing the Bangalore job, he'd have thrown everything into that and if was to carry on that success, he's not just turning up the day before the IPL starts, he's putting that work in months before. I don't think you can do both jobs to your potential. That's too much cricket.
