Gujarat Titans v Sunrisers Hyderabad IPL team news
Gujarat Titans slipped to third after Bangalore got back to winning ways with victory over Mumbai. Their low net run rate could be an issue in a play-off race which has the top and sixth-placed teams separated by two points before Monday's match.
Gujarat recognise they have an issue with runs outside of the top three so Jason Holder was promoted to No 5 in the success over Rajasthan.
Spinner Sai Kishore made his first appearance of the season in that game, subbing in for Rahul Tewatia. Prasidh Krishna continues to be surplus to requirements.
Possible XI: Sai, Gill, Buttler, Sundar, Holder, Tewatia, Nishant, Rashid, Rabada, Arshad, Siraj
Sunrisers Hyderabad continue to prove that being a one-trick pony can be no impediment. They remain extremely dangerous with the bat and extremely moderate with the ball, ticking over to more than 10 runs per over conceded on average this season.
Their strength was clear to see in defeat of Punjab last time out. They posted 235 and then Pat Cummins strangled their rivals in the powerplay. They held on despite a brilliant century from Cooper Connolly.
Cummins ended with figures of two for 34 while the return of Ntish Kumar Reddy was a major bonus. He opened the bowling and took one for 11.
Possible XI: Abhishek, Head, Ishan, Klaasen, Reddy, Arora, Smaran, Cummins, Shivang, Malinga, Sakib
The run rate in the 21 night matches in IPL in the last three years in Ahmedabad is bang on 9.6. Batting first is the way to go with that number climbing to almost a whole run more at just under ten.
Gujarat squeezed Punjab perfectly in the last match at the venue, restricting them to 163. The same fate befell Bangalore who were rolled for 155.
The hosts are the second-meanest bowling unit in IPL so taking on Sunrisers' total match runs with an unders play at 192.5 at 5/61.84 makes sense.
This is a clash of styles. Gujarat, as stated above, are a crack bowling unit with only Kolkata Knight riders managing a better economy rate. Sunrisers are No 2 to Punjab in terms of cumulative batting strike rate.
Often in this match-ups the shrewd money is on the bowling team. The driver for that view is that the markets are often swayed by the batting team. This is the case again with Sportsbook making Sunrisers favourites at 8/111.73. The 2.206/5 on Gujarat on the Exchange is the biggest of the lot and should be snaffled.
Twice already this season Gujarat have stood up to the batting bullies and come out on top. they showed expert nous and skill in the field against RCB and Punjab. if they can produce something similar here then they should go very close indeed.
There's no evidence of a gulf between the sides. in fact, Gujarat have the edge. Yes, Sunrisers go harder with the bat but there is also a notcieable drop-off with their middle- to lower-order just as there is with Gujarat.
The match could be won or lost by how GT fare in the powerplay against SRH's destructive hitters. Prising them out opens up a world of value lower down the order. Reddy is one that immediately catches the eye at 10/111.00. Reddy is a proper batter who would be a staple in most other international sides around the world. At No 5 he may be required to mount a rescue job. Another SRH player to look out for is Ravi Smaran. Smaran strikes at 161 domestically and he has yet to have a breakthough innings. It would be a surprise if he didn't do damage before the season is out so the 12s is of note.
