Daily Racing Tips: Valery Borzov can strike gold in Great St Wilfrid

Carl Harris kicks off an excellent weekend of racing with a trio of top tips...

There is plenty of decent racing on Saturday, particularly at Newmarket, Newbury and Ripon who stage their biggest day of the year with the big betting handicap of the day, the Great St Wilfrid, staged at the North Yorkshire venue. There are also some pattern races of interest and looking ahead to Sunday it is going to be a really exciting weekend. Then, of course, we are off to York where the weather is drying and Sea The Stars is a possible runner.

So to today and we start with the best bet of the day.

Azmeel (2.05) was very impressive on his racecourse debut at Sandown in July. He has that ability, that only really good ones have, to inject a race winning turn of foot and to do so up the stiff Sandown hill is even more impressive. Ryan Moore takes the ride on a colt with what they call 'plenty of fancy entries' and should land this listed Singer Stakes before moving on to bigger prizes. He looks a very nice sort and is the subject of bullish gallop reports. Azmeel is my best bet of the day.

So to Ripon where Dandy Nicholls could have run a hat full of runners, at a track very local to his North Yorkshire base but has settled for only three of the twenty that go to post for the Great St Wilfrid. The one to focus on is Valery Borzov (3.55) who is a cracking win and place bet, in my view at least.

He goes well here, having finished runner-up to Tajneed last year and has blistering early speed (as we saw at York) that could serve him well at Ripon. He showed he was back to form with a decent run at Goodwood, in the Stewards Cup, finishing sixth. In this company with such early dash I think the each-way terms and 12/1 to win is a very solid bet in a very difficult race for punters.

No prizes for putting up Diggeratt (6.00) up but he looks the outstanding bet on the all-weather on Saturday. Since being dropped in to claiming company Richard Fahey's filly has won her last two starts and can land the hat-trick. Clearly the booking on Frankie Dettori is significant and is a statement of the confidence that connections have about her chances. She is well in on official figures in a race that will take little winning. My only hope is that we can get some value in the price, but it would make a nonsense of the form book if Diggeratt failed to win.
