Saturday Horse Racing Tips: Katie Midwinter's best bets including 25/1 Goodwood fancy

Beverley, 13:45 - Back Vintage Clarets E/W @ [SP]

Vintage Clarets will enjoy the softening conditions at Beverley and is on a workable mark of 82 under 5lb claiming Ethan Tindall, holding solid claims at the weights.

The Richard and Peter Fahey-trained gelding has course-and-distance winning form and is currently 12lb below his last winning mark when successful at Ascot a year ago.

Since then, he has put in a number of competitive efforts, including when a good second to Arklow Lad in the Dash on Derby Day at Epsom. With plenty in his favour here, the experienced seven-year-old should put in a bold bid as he attempts to record his 11th career success in his 66th start.

Goodwood, 14:00 - Back Galeron E/W @ 25/126.00

One to note for Charlie Hills, Galeron could make his presence felt in this competitive handicap from a mark of 93 under the in-form David Probert, on a workable rating considering some of his form last season in similar contests.

He finished a good second to Desperate Dan in a heavy ground 14-runner Doncaster handicap last autumn from the same rating, having previously put in a number of competitive efforts, including when fourth over a mile here to Cerulean Bay.

With proven form in softer conditions should the forecast rain have an immediate impact on the ground, but versatile enough to cope with a quicker surface too, Galeron warrants each-way consideration and could fare better than in his latest run.

Sandown, 14:15 - Back Tribal Chief E/W @ 10/111.00

Things haven't quite worked out for Tribal Chief since his previous success a year ago at Goodwood. He has been luckless on numerous occasions, struggling for a clear run or powering home late in the day and just missing out. 

Having proven he is capable of performing from a similar rating, and only 2lb above his last winning mark, this could finally be his day in the sun if he's able to enjoy a favourable trip. 

Despite being a hugely likeable performer, he isn't the most reliable as he can often find trouble in running and start his race slowly, but, if things work out nicely for him, he's well-handicapped and should make his presence felt in the hands of Sean Levey for David Menuisier. 

Bet of the day: Goodwood, 14:35 - Back Tony Montana @ 9/25.50

Tony Montana isn't the most reliable either, as he has also struggled to finish in front recently, but he's another well-handicapped performer and could enjoy this step back up in distance in potentially slightly softer conditions.

He finished strongly over a mile-and-a-quarter here at the Goodwood Festival when last seen, running well under 7lb claiming Toby Moore at odds of 18/119.00 to finish a luckless fourth, having performed with some credit at Newbury and York in his previous outings this term, far from disgraced on either occasions.

Previously trained by Michael Bell, he was narrowly denied on the Knavesmire last season for his former trainer, and also finished second at 14/115.00 in a competitive 21-runner Curragh handicap from his current rating of 94. This assignment could suit perfectly and he may be worth keeping the faith in for Kevin Philippart De Foy.

The Curragh, 15:03 - Back Where Love Lives E/W @ 12/113.00

Great Barrier Reef is a hugely exciting colt and the unbeaten Coventry Stakes winner should be tough to beat in this Group Three contest, however, Where Love Lives is one to note each-way at a double-figure price and could put in a good account of himself under Christophe Soumillon. 

He beat subsequent Coventry Stakes runner-up Adaay Of Scarlett by the same distance as the favourite in a Listed Sandown contest earlier in the season when trained by Kevin Ryan, following on from a convincing win over Hickory Lad on Thirsk debut.

That form has been boosted and, now based with Donnacha O'Brien, the colt could improve for his second run for the yard following a promising fourth in the Richmond Stakes to Man's Best Friend.

Further improvement is required to match the level shown by Great Barrier Reef, but he shouldn't be discounted at the odds and could put in a bold bid for the runner-up spot at least, capable of taking advantage should the favourite fail to fire.

The son of Cotai Glory is far from the finished article and appears to still be learning and progressing as he gains experience. He has gained some valuable experience to date and could take another step forward.

Goodwood, 15:10 - Back Seagulls Eleven @ 3/14.00

Seagulls Eleven has been in the form of his life this season and has really matured into a tough, gutsy and professional Group performer. He couldn't make an impression in the Sussex Stakes when last seen, but that was a run worth forgiving in deep waters and he had his excuses. 

Dropping in class here with winning course-and-distance form, and conditions to suit should the rain arrive, there's plenty to like about Seagulls Eleven, whose close third to Zeus Olympios at Ascot last month has subsequently taken a boost at Group One level.

Sandown, 15:30 - Back Alfred Wallace E/W @ 17/29.50

The best could be yet to come from Ed Walker-trained Alfred Wallace, who is more exposed than the main market principles but has been up against tough opposition already in his career, gaining valuable experience as well as Listed honours so far this season.

The son of Dubawi is out of talented Group One-winning mare Snow Lantern, who had soft ground form, and is from a wonderful family. He has already shaped with promise and is entitled to continue progressing. 

The chestnut colt could be capable of outrunning his odds in this 7f Group Three, and is worth considering in the hands of Kieran Shoemark having already proven himself at Stakes level.

The Curragh, 15:40 - Back Princess Child E/W @ 18/119.00

Princess Child needs to bounce back from a disappointing effort at Cork when last seen, but should benefit from any rainfall and has winning form at this level. She's a proven mare with plenty of experience in her favour, and, should she improve on her latest effort, she should be capable of holding her own in this field.

It's a hugely competitive contest but if the ground is on the easier side, the Joseph O'Brien-trained contender could put in a bold bid having finished half-a-length second to Celestial Orbit in a Group Three over a mile here earlier in the term in soft to heavy ground. 

Dangerous to discount having won at this level in a Tipperary contest a year ago, the five-year-old mare could outrun her odds and make the frame under Scott McCullagh.

The Curragh, 16:15 - Back Big Gossey E/W @ 14/115.00

Curragh specialist Big Gossey was successful in Listed company here on Irish Derby Day much to the delight of his adoring fans in the crowd, and has since finished second in a Group Two at the track when chasing home Power Blue in his penultimate start.

No match for Big Mojo when last seen, he had some excuses that day and could fare better in calmer waters back in handicap company.

Although the likeable grey has to shoulder a hefty weight from a mark of 107, Sam Coen does claim 5lb aboard, easing his burden off top weight, and he has previously been able to make his presence felt in handicaps from a high mark.

Last September over 6f at the track, Big Gossey finished half-a-length second to Tango Flare when rated 104, outrunning odds of 22/123.00 on that occasion, therefore he warrants consideration in familiar surroundings, having proven he can still compete against talented rivals at the age of nine.

Windsor, 17:00 - Back Amazonian Dream E/W @ [SP]

Rod Millman-trained Amazonian Dream won from a 17lb lower mark than his previous success when victorious over course-and-distance last month. He's 4lb higher now, but was able to put in a competitive effort at odds of 12/113.00 when a close fourth to Under The Twilight when last seen, and could put in a similar performance this time around.

The seven-year-old gelding remains on a workable mark and has been performing consistently well of late. He could return to the winners' enclosure under George Wood, and may be worth keeping the faith in currently with proven course form.

Windsor, 17:30 - Back Tyger Bay E/W @ [SP]

Likeable gelding Tyger Bay is only 3lb higher than when previously successful in a Chelmsford sprint last spring, and returned from a break in good order when last seen at Lingfield.

In his latest start, the Conrad Allen-trained nine-year-old chased home Charlie Mason when finishing second at odds of 14/115.00 from mark of 77. He pulled six-lengths clear of third-placed Hierarchy in soft conditions that day, and could give another good account of himself in this contest.

Tyger Bay has finished second in all three of his previous starts at this venue, therefore could make it fourth time lucky in the hands of Jack Gilligan from a workable rating. He has proven he still retains plenty of ability and is a tough contender on his day, who could put in a threatening performance.
