Horse Racing Tips: Katie Midwinter's Saturday selections including 15/2 Ayr Gold Cup bet and 40/1 Newbury fancy

Newbury, 13:02 - Back Azure Angel E/W @ 40/141.00

At a big price, outsider of the field Azure Angel is one to note in the Group Three Newbury opener this Saturday. She's eased in grade from her two latest outings, and was only a length behind Redorange when just beaten for fourth by Starlust in a fifth-placed finish in a York Listed contest in July.

If able to replicate the level of her effort on the Knavesmire, in a run that was worth upgrading considering things didn't fall favourably for her in the closing stages, the six-year-old mare could fare better than her price suggests for Ed Bethell. She certainly shouldn't be discounted having shown she can compete with the main contenders already this season.

Newbury, 13:37 - Back Roaring Legend E/W @ 6/17.00

Likeable gelding Roaring Legend ran a brilliant race in defeat when narrowly denied by Valedictory at odds of 80/181.00 at the July Festival during the summer. He's 2lb higher rated here but should be capable of putting in another competitive effort, dangerous to underestimate.

The six-year-old grey has amassed plenty of valuable experience during his career to date for various yards, and has finished second on three occasions this year since rejoining Olly Murphy. He could return to the winners' enclosure by recording an eighth win, holding solid claims under Colin Keane in this staying contest.

Newbury, 13:37 - Back Real Dream E/W @ 33/134.00

Real Dream travelled well into the Ebor when last seen but couldn't sustain his challenge, weakening late on. He's capable of better and, from a 2lb lower mark, on a workable rating of 94, he could put in an improved effort.

The Ian Williams-trained gelding finished fifth to Ethical Diamond in last year's Ebor Handicap when rated 9lb higher than his current mark, and went on to finish a close fourth to Sons And Lovers in the Red Sea Turf Handicap in Riyadh earlier this year. He has lacked consistency since then, but has shown he still retains ability and has dropped to a lenient rating if at his best.

Bet of the day: Gowran Park, 14:06 - Back Greydreambeliever @ [sp]

Four-year-old filly Greydreambeliever is yet to win for Joseph O'Brien this year, but has put in a number of competitive efforts, finishing second on three occasions, and may have found a feasible opportunity in this contest. She makes plenty of appeal at the weights, in receipt of 5lb from Rion Rubette, with whom she must reverse form, with Julian Pietropaolo claiming 7lb aboard.

The grey daughter of Dark Angel, whose sole success so far came on debut for Karl Burke when beating Stormy Impact in a York novice event, has shown to possess plenty of talent and should put in a bold bid in this 7f contest.

Ayr, 14:30 - Back Super Soldier E/W @ 33/134.00

Karl Burke-trained Super Soldier didn't get the run of things at Doncaster recently, and could be able to improve for his return to action following an 85-day break and first run after a gelding operation. He showed some excellent form as a juvenile last season, winning on debut before being narrowly denied in respective Group Two and Listed contests.

The three-year-old is yet to show he has trained on this season, failing to make a significant impression in four starts to date, but his rating has dropped as a result and he could have more to give. It's too early to give up on the grey and, from a mark of 97, he could fare better than in previous starts this season under Clifford Lee.

Ayr, 15:05 - Back Ruby Moon @ 5/16.00

Catching The Moon won this race 12 months ago for the same connections as Ruby Moon, and the team could strike once again with this No Nay Never filly who could improve on her run in the Lowther Stakes when last seen.

She had previously finished a creditable fourth to the hugely talented Senorita Bonita in a Newmarket Group Two, following on from a debut win at Carlisle, and remains open to further improvement in only her fourth start.

A well-bred filly out of Ruby Shield, a daughter of Ruby Tuesday, a half-sister to a number of black-type achievers who also produced Midnight Mile, Ruby Moon is entitled to keep on progressing and could be worth keeping onside for a proven team in this contest.

Ayr Gold Cup, 15:40 - Back Twilight Calls E/W @ 15/28.50

A case can be made for a number of runners in the hugely competitive Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday, but Twilight Calls makes the most appeal for Richard Spencer and Classic-winning rider Saffie Osborne.

The experienced eight-year-old gelding, who makes his 40th career start in this contest, has snuck in at the bottom of the weights and holds solid claims. He has been in excellent form in recent months, achieving form figures of 12112 since his mid-season break, continuing to impress despite a rising mark.

Currently 15lb higher than when winning at Sandown in June, he proved he can be competitive from a mark of 94 when narrowly denied by Air Force One at Doncaster recently, following on from an impressive win at Goodwood in a 23-runner handicap.

Ayr Gold Cup, 15:40 - Back Ardisia E/W @ 16/117.00

Course-and-distance winner Ardisia is another contender to consider in the feature handicap. He was highly-tried as a juvenile last season for Hugo Palmer, running generally consistently well and recording five wins culminating in a Listed Redcar success last autumn.

This season, he began his three-year-old campaign from a mark of 108 and finished a creditable fourth to Coppull at odds of 50/151.00 in the Commonwealth Cup Trial. He hasn't quite kicked on since, but emerged with credit in a Listed Chester contest in his penultimate start and chased home Flash Harry on his return to handicap company at Goodwood when last seen from his current mark of 99.

With Warren Fentiman claiming 3lb in the saddle, Ardisia makes appeal at the weights and could outrun his odds, one to note as he bids for his first win of the season.

Chester, 15:46 - Back Society Kiss E/W @ 10/111.00

Three-year-old filly Society Kiss made an impression on debut last year when winning at odds of 12/113.00 in an Ascot maiden for former trainer Ralph Beckett. She subsequently lined up in the Queen Mary Stakes, finishing 12th behind winner True Love, before switching yards to be trained by John Mackie.

On yard debut in April, the daughter of A'Ali was only narrowly denied in a novice event by Shes Got A Brother before she chased home Regal Envoy in a higher class Windsor handicap.

Entitled to come on for her latest run at Kempton following a 79-day break, she could go well under Joanna Mason in this 6f sprint from a low draw. The likes of Golden Brown and Amazonian Dream also caught the eye in the line-up but have wider draws to contend with, therefore Society Kiss gets the nod from a potentially workable mark of 82.

Chester, 16:17 - Back Copper Knight E/W @ 13/27.50

Experienced veteran Copper Knight has plenty of course form in his favour around Chester, including course-and-distance winning form, and has proven he still retains ability at the grand age of 12 this year. He's currently 8lb lower than his last winning mark when successful at Beverley in May, and could give a good account of himself in his 126th career start.

Trained by Tim Easterby, the likeable gelding is on a handy mark and may be capable of making his presence felt in this field as he attempts to land the 20th win of his career.

Newbury, 16:30 - Back Storming Point @ 5/23.50

Gary and Josh Moore-trained Storming Point is dropping in class from a lowered mark of 84 following a creditable fifth-placed effort in a competitive 19-runner mile handicap at York's Ebor Festival last month. He stayed on well on that occasion, following on from a promising sixth behind Exclusive Cold at Goodwood, and, in calmer waters, could make it seventh time lucky by landing a first career success under Ryan Moore.

The three-year-old colt, who finished a close second to Needle Match on debut here last autumn, has performed well this season and a maiden win shouldn't be too far away. This could be a feasible opportunity for the son of Blue Point to get off the mark and he could be worth keeping the faith in.
