James Mackie takes a look at Friday's card at Cheltenham

Betfair's James Mackie takes a look at the racing from Cheltenham on the first day of their November meeting and has two selections across the ITV card...

  • James Mackie fancies Olly Murphy to continue his good run on Friday

  • Gunsight Ridge should love the incoming rain at Cheltenham

  • Wade Out to keep improving for the step up in trip

13:45 Cheltenham - Back Gunsight Ridge @ 3/14.00

The Veteran's Handicap Chase over 2m4f sees plenty of familiar faces sent to post and with the rain that is set to fall over Prestbury Park it makes Gunsight Ridge an attractive bet.

Although not having much form at Cheltenham, he is a horse that has ran well here before falling and at the back end of last season looked like he wasn't regressing compared to some in the field.

A winner at Sandown in February over 2m on heavy ground at a big price of 11/112.00 he kept on all the way to the line to win a nice pot off a mark of 142.

His stamina won the day in that one and he tried to use that again off 3lbs higher on his last start when seen at Aintree's Grand National meeting.

Taking on the likes of Sans Bruit at his favourite track and the talented Calico, the quicker ground ruined his plans, but he still managed to finish a competitive fourth in the valuable Grade 3 Red Rum Handicap Chase.

Running off the same mark of 145 for this event and getting his preferred softer conditions, he looks to have a big chance if following up that form.

His sole run at Cheltenham came at this meeting last year over two miles when looking to go close jumping the last behind Matata but unfortunately fell.

Plenty in the field have big question marks and need to find some level of past form whereas Gunsight Ridge looks the most consistent option in the field.

13:20 Cheltenham - Back Wade Out @ 2/13.00

It could be another good day for Olly Murphy who has made an electric start to the season, currently sitting second in the National Hunt Trainers' Championship and just three wins behind the leader Dan Skelton.

Wade Out goes for him in the Listed Novices' Chase over 3m1f and although the gelding is trying this step up in trip for the first time, I think he will want every yard of it.

Shaping like a smart type last year over hurdles when winning on debut at Uttoxeter, finishing second to Welsh Champion hurdle winner Celtic Dino, and winning at Lingfield in his first three starts he was then tried in tougher company.

Running no race on Trials Day in the 2m4f Grade 2 Novices' Hurdle, He bounced back to form at Wetherby to win a Novices' Hurdle off top weight by 13 lengths.

He finished the season at Aintree in the 20 runner Grade 3 Handicap Hurdle where he ran a good race on quicker ground than he would have liked to pick up sixth.

Always bought to be a chaser he made his seasonal debut this term at Worcester in what looked a hot little affair.

Being ridden quietely out the back he picked up late on to nab the Grade 1 placed hurdler Wendigo on the line, showing plenty of stamina under a great ride by Sean Bowen.

Some of his best runs have come with soft in the description and from that chase debut he looks to be crying out for a step up in trip.

Being a 3m PTP winner on soft ground his stamina should be no issue and hopefully he can improve again from his recent run.

He takes on a small field of four other runners that all have claims in their own right but overall he has the scope to be the superstar in the field in comparison.
