Today's Horse Racing Tips: Tom Collins will relish conditions at Pontefract

Pontefract Racecourse
Silvestre De Sousa can get the best out of Tom Collins

Alan Thompson begins a week of horse racing tipping and he has two selections from Stratford and Pontefract...

"It will be plenty soft enough at Pontefract and that will suit David Elsworth's three-year-old colt Tom Collins"

It will be plenty soft enough at Pontefract and that will suit David Elsworth's three-year-old colt Tom Collins who was a seven furlong winner in the mud at Newmarket as a two-year-old. To be fair he has been a shade disappointing in 2020 to date, but was well supported when having excuses on his penultimate run and although finishing fourth at Doncaster the time before that (June) he was only beaten a head. He certainly didn't run well at Newmarket last time out but he could enjoy these conditions today.

The favourite is William Haggis's charge Sea Trout Reach who ran well from the front at Haydock under Richard Kingscote last time and takes his chance in this off the same mark. However, his only win was on good to firm ground at Windsor and that was after a long lay off (298 days).

Cary is a hot Commodity at Stratford

Back Cary's Commodity @ 11/4 in the 14:15 Stratford

I really like the look of the inform Jonjo O'Neill team's Cary's Commodity, the five-year-old prevailed at Catterick on just his second hurdling start. He went much better than the bare result suggests when finishing fourth on handicap debut at Cartmel in August, he was travelling well before his stamina seemingly ran out and he weakened late when attempted over three miles. But, today not only is he 2lbs better off but he also drops back in trip, this two-and-three-quarter miles should prove ideal for him and I think the O'Neill team have a good chance of getting into the winners winner's enclosure again.

Dr Richard Newland and his team have improved Tango Echo Charlie quite a bit since moving from Ireland he's finished runner-up twice in novice hurdles, both here and at Cartmel, before being beaten less than a length into third at Uttoxeter last time out, he seems quite fairly treated for his handicap debut. But he just keeps finding one or two too good and I wonder how genuine he is. I think Cary's Commodity will be the one he finds just too good today.
