"steps up to 10 furlongs and on both pedigree and run style that should be a big plus"
Alan Thompson has two selections from Chester and Chepstow to try and start the weekend with a bang...
Strait Of Hormuz will enjoy this trip
Back Strait Of Hormuz @ 4/1 in the 16:40 Chester
Jedd O'Keeffe's three-year-old gelding Strait Of Hormuz beat a pair of decent progressive runners when he won after returning from a 270 day break on his penultimate start at Haydock over a mile. He then went to Ascot where I don't think the race was run to suit him and I feel he would have run better given a stronger gallop and he finished midfield.
Today, he steps up to 10 furlongs and on both pedigree and run style that should be a big plus. He did all his best work late at Haydock and was running on at Ascot into a minor place. He also has winning form at this track from 2019 and the horse he beat into second that day was just touched off at Glorious Goodwood from 88, so this mark of 87 should be well within his compass.
Another one I liked in the race was Richard Fahey's Gabrial The One who ran well in a strange race here earlier in the week. The four-year-old seldom runs a bad race at this venue, a winner here once before and four second place finishes, and with a handy low draw in stall five now under David Nolan he could be close again.
Gambon enjoys it round here
Back Gambon @ 3/1 in the 18:05 Chepstow
The Eve Johnson Houghton yard are in superb form and they run Gambon in this event, who not only boasts a course and distance win here but has only been narrowly beaten in two of his last three starts. He is just 1lb above his last winning mark and he traveled so well for a long way when a fine third here last time, so he obviously likes the track. It may be time for him to get his head back in front.
I feel Doc Sportello will be the one he will have to beat if he is to gain a victory here. Tony Carroll's eight-year-old looks like he might be running into a bit of form, he ran a big race to finish second behind a rapidly-improving winner at Windsor. He has been raised another 2lb, but he is still fairly treated based on old form but I am not sure if conditions will be to his liking today, any rain though would be to his advantage.
