Alan Thompson has two selections from Haydock and Chepstow...
"It was no real surprise to see him take a big step forward with a career best at Newmarket last time out on his handicap debut, doing his best work at the end of the race over seven furlongs."
Frozen Waters will enjoy the step up today
Richard Hannon's Frozen Waters should be sending favourite backers home happy in the lucky last at Haydock. It was no real surprise to see him take a big step forward with a career best at Newmarket last time out on his handicap debut, doing his best work at the end of the race over seven furlongs. He has similarly soft conditions to take on today but also an extra furlong which will see him at his best. He is also just 2lbs higher in a race that isn't showing too many obvious challengers.
Kuwait Shield is taking a big drop in class today after finishing down the field at Glorious Goodwood last time and this is a big drop in class from that, so will be intersting to see how he performs. The one I fear the most though is Temper Trap, he was a disappointing beaten favourite last time out on the all weather at Newcastle on Tuesday but he was in good form prior to that run. I don't know if it was the conditions or the step up in trip that seen him fail on Tuesday but with a 5lb hike in the weights from his Hamilton win and for that reason I am prepared to take him on with Frozen Waters.
Lady Celia will enjoy the step up to six furlongs
Lady Celia has gone from strength to strength this year winning three of her six starts. Having run well at Hamilton last time out to finish second she should be able to handle the undulations of Chepstow. She was the best finisher on her part of the track at Hamilton which suggests, had she been on the other side, she may well have recorded another win.
She has recorded her best Racing Post Rating over this trip so I am expecting her to go well stepping back up from five furlongs and she represents the Richard Fahey yard who don't tend to send too many to this track, for that reason alone the filly is of interest.
There is plenty that won't want to hang about here and the current favourite Eye Of The Water will want to dictate from the front, but I don't think he will get his own way. There are a few others that will prefer to lead, specifically HandyTalk, which should set the race up for a closer like Lady Celia.
