Alan Thompson has two selections from the televised Newbury card on Saturday afternoon...
"he's not the type of trainer to come down south for these types of races unless he thinks he has a serious chance of winning"
Orbaan will be doing his best work in the final furlong
The fact that David O'Meara has entered his five-year-old Orbaan at Newbury pricks serious interest as he's not the type of trainer to come down south for these types of races unless he thinks he has a serious chance of winning. Summerghand winning the Stewards Cup is a prime example of this and it's even more the case given the Ebor Festival is next week when there's a few races he could go for.
He won the time before last when just getting up inside the final half furlong and then last time travelled like a dream into the race before fading inside the final furlong. For me it was clearly the case that he was put into the race too soon and that by pretty much getting in front too far from home the horse thought he did enough. I'm confident that given a far more patient ride he can win again and at around 15/2 he's a nice price too.
Hukum is underestimated by the handicapper
Hukum won a handicap at Royal Ascot off a mark of 90 and won it well, staying on strongly inside the final furlong. He gave every impression that day that a step up in trip will see him improve again. He's bred to be very good being by Sea The Stars out of a Kingmambo mare and he's so lightly raced that not only will the extra distance see him improve but the experience and the run last time will have brought him on a ton too.
Owen Burrows may not bang the winners in left, right and centre, but he knows how to bring forward progressive horses and has been in form himself pretty much all season. Strictly on official ratings he has plenty to find but his current mark of 97 vastly underestimates his ability in my opinion. With Jim Crowley set to ride, who has been in the form of his life this season.
