Saturday Racing Multi: Gosden and Palmer to soothe Goodwood nerves with 14/1 double

Goodwood, 13:50 Tip: Back Valedictory @ 3/14.00

With Godolphin head honcho Charlie Appleby again virtually absent from Goodwood with just two runners prior to Friday, the blue is represented by John and young Thady Gosden here with Valedictory who should have optimum conditions to justify his position as the 3/14.00 favourite for the opener.

And backing favourites at Goodwood this week hasn't been unsuccessful in the jousts with bookmakers.

Valedictory's credentials are fairly obvious. Upped in trip to 1m6f on his last two starts, he has found his groove on quick ground with the new trip unlocking the improvement and the cheekpieces have helped as Gosden senior called him a "bit of a dreamer".

He's holding an Ebor entry and off 95 is an interesting position.

While the Newmarket victory was off a steady pace (finish speed 109%), he looked a stayer with the way he had to be shaken up but he was impressive winning over course and distance in the spring, coming from deep and off the pace against a steady pace again and out of the two performances, he looked much better visually with the way he travelled at Goodwood.

He might be a little quirky, but these tricky stayers with headgear are just the types Gosden excels with.

Goodwood, 16:10 Tip: Back We're Goosers @ 11/43.75

Oisin Murphy riding for the biscuit baron Hugo Palmer produces a 25% strike-rate from 175 rides and 44 wins.

We're Goosers, partnered by Murphy last time finished stone-bonking last in the Britannia at Royal Ascot and may well have been one of the runners that sparked the ire of the trainer lambasting the draw bias.

Drawn in 7 then, all the main players were drawn high stands' side and he had no chance.

He's back down to 7f which might be of great benefit too here as he pulverised a field at Newmarket at the Craven meeting by nearly 10L clocking a mega closing sectional of 12.08 seconds - which was more than a second faster than anything else in the race and was the second quickest sectional in the final furlong on the whole card.

Goodwood and quick ground back to 7f will very much suit after the Royal Ascot disaster.
