Promise over further on hurdling debut
Uttoxeter 19:05: Lough Carra 0.5pt e/w 25/1
Lough Carra has halved in price this morning but I think he's still overpriced in a very weak novices' hurdle at Uttoxeter.
No Recollection heads the market and he showed a good level of ability at his best on the flat. However, he's not produced the same level since being gelded and it's concerning how weakly he's finished on his last two starts.
Maillot Blanc sets the standard on hurdling form for No Recollection and the rest to aim at and he has a good chance but the market hasn't missed that whereas I think it has missed the potential of Lough Carra.
He raced four times in Irish points for Philip Fenton but he was far too keen going to see out the three miles and didn't show much promise as a result.
However, on his first start for Jennie Candlish at Hexham over 2m4f he ran better than the margin beaten suggests. He raced keenly under restraint at the back of the field early on, a long way behind the leading trio. His jumping technique wasn't always convincing and he briefly dropped off the back of the main group after 3 out.
He was still travelling well, though, and once nudged along he made headway to be in touch jumping 2 out. He was given a reminder approaching the bend and looked to race a bit green before having little left climbing the hill and fading to finish a well beaten sixth.
The way he travelling into contention suggests Lough Carra has some ability and the drop back to two miles could see him in a better light if they choose to ride him much handier and try to settle him there. It may also be that his jumping will improve for that experience as he was clumsy at times.
He clearly looks a future chaser and it may be that they will hold him up in last again despite the very weak company he's facing and that's unlikely to see him in the best light but in such a poor race I think he's got the potential to be better than his results suggest and is overpriced as a result. Any 16/1 or bigger appeals.
