Opportunity to bounce back in small field
Chepstow 13:35: The Mighty Don 1pt win 6/1
The Mighty Don is far from a reliable performer but I think the circumstances of this veterans chase give him a chance to bounce back on his first start of the season.
He was well beaten in a much stronger handicap chase over this C&D on his first start of last season but ran better next time at Cheltenham in a five-runner race.
His jumping was still an issue that day and he made a few very bad mistakes but I think he was helped by not being crowded and shuffled back between horses after those errors and he ran on well late on to finish second.
I thought he was never really travelling at Sandown next time and that trip looked to stretch his stamina as he dropped away in the home straight and he ran no race at all when switched back to hurdling at Cheltenham on New Year's Day.
The Mighty Don was taken out of the Kim Muir with a vet's cert and didn't run again last season which suggests he had a problem. I'm hoping that they have managed to resolve any issue he had as I think the small field and likely good pace today will suit him with five of his six rivals having the potential to want to race very handily.
There is a slight concern that he's shown a tendency to edge to his right at fences and his jumping in general will always be a worry but he's now off a 5lb lower mark than when finishing second at Cheltenham and in a race where there are few completely reliable types, he appeals at 11/2 or bigger.
