Two seconds for Alan yesterday but he is looking to go one place better with two selections from Goodwood today...
"He still looks well treated on old form, and Sean Kirrane takes that 5lb back off with his claim..."
Abel Handy should take some beating at Goodwood
Abel Handy landed a Class 4 handicap at Ripon seven days ago and I don't see any reason why he wouldn't have more than enough in the tank to follow up in this field. He finished an excellent fourth in the Great St Wilfrid on ground softer than ideal prior to his Ripon success. He has to carry a 5lb penalty for that success but he still looks well treated on old form, and Sean Kirrane takes that 5lb back off with his claim. I think he is clearly enjoying his racing at the minute and I can see him going in again today.
The one I fear the most is the course specialist and veteran Pettochside, I put the 11-year-old up as a tip last time out at this track as he always runs well here. He is a six time course winner and only went down by a nose 11 days ago. I am sure he will put in another bold showing, as he seldom lets his followers down but he is up 4lbs for that small defeat last time and I just think he will have to be at his very best if he is to get the better of Abel Handy today.
Salsoul could be hard to pass if she gets a soft lead
Mark Johnston is often worth following at Goodwood and I think he has a chance of upsetting the odds with his two-year-old filly Salsoul here. He is no stranger to this race and won it in 2015 with Dawaa and, I think he has a glorious opportunity to take it again with Salsoul who will be ridden by Joe Fanning. The Kodiac filly was a little disappointing here at Goodwood in July but came back from a break as good as ever to win at Chelmsford last time out. I think her chances are enhanced today as I don't think there isn't much pace on here so it's highly possible she'll get a very soft lead and be able to dictate the pace.
Royal Address is the obvious one in the field, Willie Haggas' charge won impressively last time out at Sandown. The filly was well supported in the market that day, and it will be interesting to see if the money comes again. They were certainly proved right last time as she stormed clear to win easily. However, the 14lb rise in the weights may well be enough to halt the filly's progress, also that win was over five furlongs, today she is stepping back up to six and that burden may just prove a bit too much.
