Goodwood, 13:50 - Back Tarriance E/W @ 11/112.00

While there was a temptation to put up Valedictory once again in this handicap after he did this column a favour at Newmarket last time, he is in what looks a deeper race and his price seems tight enough considering the relatively short turnaround.

Although fully respectful of John & Thady Gosden's charge, I'm intrigued by top weight Tarriance, who is a classy performer at his best and is back in a UK handicap for the first time since taking last season's Melrose at York.

He was given a shot at the St Leger on the back of that but understandably found that a bridge too far at that stage of his development. He did look more at home back in handicap company (which held Group 2 status) in Saudia Arabia, finishing third behind subsequent French Group 2 stakes winner Sons And Lovers.

That form is something of a standout in this field and it's easy enough to forgive Tarriance's other two efforts this season which both came in classy stakes affairs.

I don't mind top weights at all around Goodwood and Andrew Balding's Frankel gelding looks solid each-way value at 11/112.00.

Lillie Langtry Stakes, Goodwood, 15:00 - Back Amelia Earhart @ 8/19.00

Although rather disappointed that Amelia Earhart didn't perform a little better as this column's selection for the Irish Oaks last time, her performance wasn't that bad in ratings terms and I'm prepared to give her another chance as she eases back in grade slightly here.

Aidan O'Brien's filly recorded a Timeform rating of 105 when bolting up in the Cheshire Oaks on her seasonal reappearance and was only 3lb below that at the Curragh, and there's every chance she can rate higher still with her stamina drawn out over this longer trip.

Being by Camelot and a full sister to strong stayer Cleveland, it would be no surprise whatsoever if this 1m 6f trip plays very much to Amelia Earhart's strengths, and it's worth bearing in mind she was sent off a relatively short price to win the Oaks on the back of that impressive Chester success in the spring.

There's still plenty of time for Amelia Earhart to get her career back on track and the Ballydoyle team appear to have turned the corner this week in terms of stable form.

Goodwood, 17:20 - Back Rock Of Cashel E/W @ 100/1101.00

On the face of it, tipping Norwegian raider Rock Of Cashel at 100/1101.00 under top weight in the handicap that closes Goodwood looks fanciful at best - barmy at worst - but there are reasons for thinking he can outrun those odds.

Niels Petersen's charge started his career with Aidan O'Brien and ran in some top two-year-old races before keeping good company in the early part of his three-year-old career, though his only success came in a four-runner minor event at Navan.

However, he didn't really go on from that and 'the Lads' decided to cut their losses at the end of the year when he was sold for 40,000 guineas.

It's probably fair to say the selection didn't really hit the ground running in some good handicaps out in Meydan for his new trainer, but he was back on song with a comfortable win at Ovrevoll in May and then didn't get any sort of chance to show what he could do from a poor position on the far side in the Buckingham Palace at Royal Ascot last time.

Based on that success two starts back, Rock Of Cashel still retains plenty of ability and his mark of 92 could be generous if he gets back to the levels he was capable of last year.

As I said earlier, he's possibly a barmy selection, but at massive odds I'm prepared to take a chance each-way.
