mark fancies three on the fourth day of glorious goodwood

Horse racing expert Mark Milligan has studied Friday's action at Glorious Goodwood and come up with three selections to back on the Betfair Sportsbook including a stayer at a nice price...

  • Mullins can take marathon contest
  • Scoville to prove too hot in Golden Mile
  • Joseph O'Brien runner the day's best bet

Goodwood, 13:50 - Back Highwind E/W @ 12/113.00

This marathon handicap is a staple of the Glorious Goodwood meeting and, certainly for as long as I can remember, it's always been started by flag, but for this year starting stalls will be in action. That obviously adds a different dynamic, but it probably wouldn't pay to get too hung up on the draw given the extreme distance of the race and instead it's likely best just to try and find the best horse.

My starting point in these staying events on the flat is to see which of the tops jumps trainers have got runners and there are a few to choose from in here.

The one that catches my eye at the prices is Highwind, who is still relatively low mileage for a six-year-old and has the master Willie Mullins in his corner.

He presumably hasn't been all that easy to train but he'll come into this fresher than most having had just two starts this year, the latest a promising effort when fourth to Reverend Hubert at the Curragh last month.

With five places available on the Sportsbook, Highwind makes plenty of each-way appeal at 12/113.00.

Golden Mile, Goodwood, 15:00 - Back Scoville E/W @ 8/19.00

Without a doubt, the Golden Mile is one of the most competitive handicaps of the entire year and this renewal looks no exception, with plenty of the field holding some sort of chance.

Beagle Bay has proven popular in the betting, particularly after he was handed stall one right on the inside, and he'll come here very much on the up as he goes in search of a hat-trick.

However, the Ralph Beckett team could be in slightly better form and he looks tight enough now at around 3/14.00 in such a fiercely competitive race.

The one I like from an each-way angle is Scoville, who looked like he was going to be a world beater in his early days but has had rather a chequered time of things since then.

He did look as though he was back on track in the Hunt Cup last time, though, doing comfortably best of those that raced close up in a contest that favoured closers on his first start following a wind op.

A high draw has been no barrier to success in this race in recent years and Scoville is still pretty unexposed compared to the majority of his rivals.

Goodwood, 16:10 - Back Galen @ 4/15.00

This may only be a conditions race in name, but it's a Group-class contest on paper and there's every chance that Joseph O'Briens' Galen could prove too good for his rivals if back to the pick of his 2025 form.

The son of Gleneagles beat Jan Brueghel in the Group 3 Alleged Stakes at the Curragh last season and then strung a series of good efforts together in defeat, most notably when fourth to Hong Kong superstar Romantic Warrior on his final start of the year.

He clearly wasn't right when well held on his 2026 bow in Saudi Arabia, but fared much better when fourth in the Wolferton at Royal Ascot last time and should come on for the run having missed 122 days prior to that.

He does need to reverse form with Haatem from last season's Wolferton (where they finished 1-2), but he was conceding 5lb to that rival on the day and they meet on a level playing field this time.
