Wechaad has performed with immense credit in three-year-old handicaps this term. The Roger Varian-trained son of Oasis Dream ran a fine seventh in a Royal Ascot handicap prior to a third-placed finish at Newmarket's July Course. That effort can be upgraded as he was slightly hampered at a crucial stage of the race. He remains on the same handicap mark and I predict a bold showing for this course and distance winner.
This season's Group 1 Vincent O'Brien National Stakes had an open look to it, with the likely favourite a one-time winner, versus plenty of other unexposed and improving types. Step forward Giant Sequoia, who seems to be progressive nicely for Aidan O'Brien. The Frankel colt was a shade disappointing when beaten on debut here, but he improved next time to score well at the same venue. He was more workmanlike, than flashy, when landing a Group 2 prize over course and distance last month, but he strikes me as a horse who may save a bit for himself. I would be disappointed if he wasn't able to reach a minor placing.
Big Hitter is likely to be all the rage in this moderate maiden against plenty of runners who are destined for nurseries at the end of this flat season. The daughter of Starspangledbanner has shown plenty of ability in a trio of two-year-old contests this season. She has plenty in hand on the figures, and if she even reproduced any on those three-placed-finishes, it would surely be enough to land the spoils. I will take her to finish in the first two as a precaution, with any rain a bonus to her obvious claims.
I am a big fan of the William Haggas-trained Lilt. The Lope De Vega filly won her two first starts, a soft ground maiden on sole novice outing, prior to winning a Listed race at York on seasonal debut this year. Her running-on sixth, when upped significantly in class in the G1 Prix De Diane at Chantilly, was a decent effort. That experience ought to have helped and I feel she is capable of a good display on this easier ground in Ireland.
