  • Ran respectably on yard debut

  • Could have tactical advantage

  • Magistrato is overpriced at Newton Abbot

Newton Abbot - 14:40 - Back Magistrato

There's the rare sight at Newton Abbot today of a repeat of a race from earlier in the season with Stepney Causeway, Guinness Affair and Magistrato once again facing each other having done so at Warwick at the end of last month. The latter got the better of his two rivals that day and I think the market is underrating his chance of doing so again today.

He made the running that day before being joined by Guinness Affair towards the end of the back straight. He soon got the better of that horse and the quite comfortably fended off the late challenge of Stepney Causeway.

Magistrato was bought for £22,000 after that to join Deborah Cole and made a respectable debut for the yard at Aintree. He was ridden more patiently that day in a race where there were two other possible front runners and he raced keenly under restraint at the back of the field. He was still in last turning out of the back straight before making headway to be in behind the leaders at 2 out but he couldn't quite go with them approaching the last and finished fourth.

Magistrato has been dropped a pound for that run which I think is a bit generous and I think he could gain a tactical advantage today if they go back to making the running.

Although Guinness Affair ended up making the running for most of the race at Hexham, that wasn't the intention from the start and he ended up there as a result of poor jumping from his two rivals. He might have more improvement to come on only his third chase start but that was a bad race he won and both him and Stepway Causeway are 3lb worse off running under their penalties than they would be if running off their new marks.

There is the worry that Magistrato has played up at the start and was very slowly away at Huntingdon and caused a delay last time at Aintree but I think the market has overreacted to the victories of his two rivals since the Warwick race and any 11/43.75 or bigger appeals.

Back Magistrato in the 14:40 at Newton Abbot 1pt win at 7/24.50
