Rhys Williams' Monday Racing Tips: French recruit to strike on British debut

Our racing expert has one selection on Monday

Rhys Williams has analysed Monday's racing and has one selection at Wolverhampton.

"That race has worked out very well with the winner and fifth winning Group 3s since while the runner up is now rated the equivalent of 98."

Tricky ride who has shown ability

Wolverhampton 18:00: Duty Beyond 1pt win 12/1

Duty Beyond looked anything but a straightforward ride when racing in France and wore a hood on all three starts but he also showed enough ability to suggest that he can be competitive off an opening mark of 73.

He made his debut at Saint Cloud over seven furlongs and after being a bit slowly away, he made headway to track the leader leaving the back straight but briefly raced very keenly when restrained in behind that rival. Pushed along with two furlongs to go, he raced in a leading line of four before dropping away in the final furlong to finish fourth.

That race has worked out very well with the winner and fifth winning Group 3s since while the runner up is now rated the equivalent of 98.

Duty Beyond was well beaten on his only other start last year at Chantilly. The ground was far softer that day and he raced keenly without cover out wide before fading rapidly with 1½ furlongs to go.

Given a break after, he returned in April and was dropped back to six furlongs. He raced a bit keenly under restraint towards the back of field and then hung badly left when asked for his effort which resulted in his jockey being unable to ride him out to the line and he finished a well beaten eighth.

Duty Beyond was subsequently bought for 40,000gns and he's been gelded since which may bring improvement from him. He's also likely to be better for a return to seven furlongs and the switch to an artificial surface could suit too.

There is the obvious concern that he will remain a difficult ride and not allow his ability to come out on the track and there is a worry that they will drop him out and look to settle him towards the back of the field from his wide draw rather than going forward and trying to settle him behind the leaders but the form of his debut suggests he can be competitive off 73 and any 10/1 or bigger appeals.
