Weather forecast for Thursday
A combination of sun and light winds suggest scoring should be low on day one. Temperatures are set to peak at around 75 degrees in mid-afternoon after starting out in the high 50s. Flags will be limp to begin with and flutter at no more than 6mph after lunch. In short, there seems no real advantage for either wave.
I usually look further down the odds for FRL punts but it's hard to get away from Shane Lowry in this market at Wentworth.
The Irishman is a huge fan of this event and that love often comes out on the opening day.
Lowry hasn't yet had the first-round lead here but he's been close. His 18-hole positions since debut in 2010 in include second (2014), fourth (2020) and fifth twice (2017 and 2021).
He's also been in the top 15 after the first lap on three other occasions.
The Irishman returns this year as the defending champion and looking like a man firing himself up for the Ryder Cup after finishing tied third in the Irish Open.
The owner of 10 top 15s in this event, Lowry can thrive early from his 09:00 tee-time alongside fellow Ryder Cuppers Tommy Fleetwood and Sepp Straka.
Joost Luiten played alongside Lowry in the final round of last week's Irish Open and finished tied 12th, just two shots behind third spot.
That followed a fifth place in the European Masters at Crans so the Dutchman is clearly in good nick.
And yet he's not raving about his performances. Writing on his own website, Luiten said: "A very positive thing is that I didn't feel like I was playing too well. It was just really solid golf, sure, but I wasn't making long putts or holed balls from far out.
"It was just a steady wave and that is currently good enough to participate at the top." In short, it seems like there's more to come.
For the fourth time in nine events, Luiten ended the opening round in the top eight so he's been making lots of fast starts.
And that's been the pattern here too. Luiten was first-round leader in 2016 thanks to a 65 while in the last four years he's ended Thursday in fifth (2019) and seventh (2021), shooting 68 both times.
Luiten, who tees off at 09:10, has some solid credentials in this market for a 66/167.00 shot.
Gavin Green is always worth keeping on the radar for this market.
He's a proven fast starter and seven of his last eight openers on the DP World Tour have been rounds in the 60s.
After not quite getting in the place money, he did so in style at Crans two weeks ago when banking a piece of the first-round lead via a 63.
The last time we saw him on English soil, Green was eighth after both 18 and 72 holes in the British Masters.
The Malaysian has also gone low early in round one here, shooting a 5-under 67 to sit fourth after day one on his penultimate appearance in 2020.
Back the 11:25 starter at three figures.
