Masked Marvel: Leads home Brown Panther in the St Leger
Masked Marvel lands the St Leger for John Gosden and William Buick...
In a furiously-run race, it was John Gosden's Masked Marvel who prevailed in comprehensive fashion from Brown Panther with the favourite Sea Moon back in third. Sent off at a Betfair SP of [9.0], Masked Marvel was held up in touch off the strong pace set by his stable-companion Buthelezi and stretched away after taking over around two furlongs out. Brown Panther stuck to his task well having come off the bridle earlier than most and he was three lengths behind Masked Marvel at the death, with the [3.07] favourite Sea Moon half a length further back in third, though he may well have finished second but for meeting trouble in the straight. The filly Blue Bunting was something of a disappointment, never threatening after being held up in last, eventually finishing sixth.
Masked Marvel's success was a second successive win the oldest classic for the John Gosden/William Buick combination after Arctic Cosmos' victory last year, while overall it was a fourth win in the race for Gosden.
