Carl Harris looks forward to a cracking day's racing at Newbury and tells us who our money should be on.
Its a big day at Newbury and having landed the Super Sprint winner for the past two years, I will be looking for a hat-trick, which if landed, will see me off to buy a lottery ticket for the evening draw. Fortunately there are two other races that look easier to solve.
High Standing (2.20) is a horse who has an 100% record over 6 furlongs, boasting the Wokingham at Royal Ascot amongst his victories. Now in the care of William Haggas, he has won three times for his new trainer and is improving hand over fist.
Ryan Moore gave the four year-old a great ride at Ascot and retains the ride in this group three company. Though stepping up in class, I would be surprised if there were not further improvements to come and I honestly cannot see him being beaten. This could be a top class performer over six furlongs and the Newbury going should be perfect for him. This is a very solid bet and is awarded NAP status.
Frankie Dettori takes the ride aboard Godolphin's lightly raced four year-old Singspiel colt who reopposes Tranquil Tiger, on equal terms, after getting his measure last time at Sandown.
Covert Ambition (3.55) should be able to make it three wins from only four career starts for a stable that is now is full flight and firing in the winners with regularity.
So what about the Super Sprint? Well I am going for a featherweight. Right at the bottom of the card is Reach for The Sky (3.25) running with only 7-11. The race conditions have dealt this once-raced horse a good weight. A winner first time out, there is sure to be improvement following the filly's cosy win at Bath. She showed a good turn of foot and in a competitive race she is worth a good each-way bet.
Saturday's Best Bets
2.20 Newbury- High Standing, Win
3.25 Newbury - Reach for The Sky, Win and place
3.55 Newbury- Covert Ambition, Win
